Fosters would be the most publicised Australian beer, and is comparable
with your similarly marketroid-touted Buddweiser, which is in my
opinion worse than Millers.  I was once taken to the old Sam Adams
brewery near MLoo's pad, where I tasted a variety of their beers, and
agree that they are good, some better than others.  When I buy beer
here, it is the stuff made by the Coopers family (which fortunately
recently resisted a take-over).  As I have read that Coopers is now
exporting to USA, it may be possible for you to do a comparative taste
test, so look out for it.   My personal favourite is the Pale Ale,
turned, to mix the sludge from the bottom in with the liquid, but the
other day, for the first time, I tried their low alcohol (2.7%) version
and found it good, much better than I had expected.

In USA, as in Australia, there are boutique breweries, some of which
produce quite delightful beers.  On the occasion of his last voyage
here, I took MLoo to the country town of Goolwa, to the Steam Exchange
Brewery, where he sampled their "Steam Ale", and he immediately
commented that it was the same flavour as some obscure USAn beer he had
drunk ages ago. The brewery man said that his beer was, in fact made to
that recipe, using imported American hops.  I was impressed that MLoo's
taste "Buds" still worked effectively.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05
 
      Title: Home-Made Ginger Beer
 Categories: Beverage
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      2 oz Fresh ginger
      2    Lemons
      1 ts Cream of tartar
      1 lb Sugar
      1 ga Boiling water
      1 oz Yeast
 
  This home-brew remains a favourite party drink in a Welsh household
  for both adults and children.  You will need eight pint bottles or
  four quart bottles.  They should be of a strong material and have
  firm caps with metal springs to imprison the effervescent liquid -
  it's more explosive than champagne.  Makes 1 gallon.
  
  Roughly crush the ginger root.  Wash and slice the lemons into thick
  rings. Put the ginger, lemon, cream of tartar and sugar in a large
  bowl. Pour the boiling water over.  Stir and leave to cool to blood
  temperature. Stir in the yeast.  Leave to ferment for 24 hours.  Skim
  off the yeast. Strain and bottle the liquid.  Leave for three days
  before broaching it.
