Ärende: Anne Arundel Seafood

DS> [regarding AA Seafood] He reported that the
DS> fish was not quite as good as previous -- less fish, more breading.
DS> Its a bit far for us to go without good reason, but if you ever do
DS> give it a try let us know what you think.

ML> That's good news and bad news, I suppose: the good news being
 ML> that it sounds like another place we can strike off the list;
ML> but if Carol and I are ever right in the neighborhood, in the
ML> right frame of mind and stomach, ...

I know I said that we were unlikely to go that far for fish & chips,
but today Gail had some shopping to do that needed a visit to K-Mart.
The closest one is in Glen Burnie. Decided to also pay a visit to Big
Lots. From there, it was only a short five minute drive to Anne
Arundel Seafood, so we took the side trip for lunch. I had a crab
cake and she had the fish (no chips, just fish).

My crab cake was a large 8 oz hunk for $10.95, with crackers on the
side. Could have had a platter with two sides for $18.95 or bun
instead of crackers. I'd have placed it about equal to the one I had
at Kaufman's -- i.e. not very good. It had a lot of filling, and
very little lump meat. Flavor was ok, but nothing special. Might
mention that they had a 4 oz sandwich for $7.00 also.

Gail's fish was pretty good, but not as much to our taste as what we
get at Red Robin (our best fish & chips so far). For $7.95 she got
four moderately decent sized pieces of fish (perhaps 3/4 of a hand
size). The coating was a cornmeal based breading, with some spices in
it (mostly pepper?). As my friend said, a little bit thick in a few
places but not as thick/bready as I had imagined. Actually, it fell
off easily to reveal a firm white fish with large flakes -- don't know
what kind of fish, but like cod that we've had in the past.

They had about six beers on tap, including two flavors of Sam Adams.
  One of the beers on tap was called Blue Moon, just for you:-}}
They also had Coors lite on tap.

We had cokes from the cooler in a plastic bottle. They had vanilla
coke there. I thought that had disappeared from the market?

Atmosphere was pure fish market. You either ate in a room where
there were iced trays of fish for sale, sitting on picnic style tables
with built in benches and a painted concrete floor -- or you went
outside (sort of) to the same sort of benches on a porch with a
plastic sheet covering the outside rail.

You could order food from the kitchen counter in another small room,
or you could order food from the fish market counter. The kitchen
served the crab cakes, steamed crabs ($15 per dozen for females up to
$70 per dozen for jumbos), various platters, the fried fish etc. The
fish market counter would serve you raw fish to go or steam an order
for you. They had shrimp (three sizes), scallops, clams, mussels
($4.95 per dozen), oysters, soft crabs, a variety of fish (don't know
if fresh or previously frozen), crayfish, and whole Maine lobster
(there was one puny one there and one that the guy said weighed 3.5
  pounds at $15.95 per pound).

They had a sign listing a pound of fresh crab meat at $29.95 for jumbo
lump down to $15 for "special". The guy in the kitchen said that
their steamed crabs were a mixture of local and Louisiana.

If you go looking for it, it is a blue building on the corner of
Mountain and Solley roads -- or of MD route 177 and where MD route 648
  turns south.

I'm not going to put it on the short list for the Picnic's Thursday
night dinner, but the two of you might like it for some of their other
seafood items -- e.g. mussels and oysters.

                               Dale Shipp
