We have a similar phenomenon here:

Loblaw Companies Limited is the largest food retailer in Canada with
about 1700 supermarkets operating under a variety of regional
banners and different store names based on size. When they buy
somebody out they tend to keep the old name alive.

Loblaw's regional divisions include Westfair Foods Ltd. (Western
Canada>, National Grocers Ltd. (Ontario), Provigo Inc. (Quebec) and
Atlantic Wholesalers Ltd. (Atlantic Canada).

On the retail side we have:

Loblaw also owns the private label brands President's Choice and No
Name. The President's Choice, or PC brand, was the first private
label to be marketed as a higher-quality product, as opposed to
other stores' generic brands, like No-Name.

Yellowknife had an OK Economy downtown when I got here. It got
upgraded to a SuperValu and then an Extra Foods in the 80's as the
town grew. Then we got a second Extra Foods in the suburbs as well,
which later devolved into a Real Canadian Wholesale Club when they built
another (third) Extra Foods.

When I arrived in 1980 we had a small Loblaws (OK Economy), a
competing IGA, an Italian bakery, a German bakery, an excellent
fruit and vegetable store run by Seventh Day Adventists with their
own greenhouses in Alberta, a Newfoundland fish store, and a
delightful central European deli run by a Hungarian guy. They are
all gone now, crushed by Loblaw's initially low but inevitably
rising prices and its cheap but low quality in-house bakery.

There is NO competition left here except my Co-Op and one butcher
shop both of which I am fiercely loyal to and promote heavily. As a
Realtor I am the first point of contact and a source of info and
tips to about 100 new residents a year and I steer them to the
Co-Op as much as I can. I will not step into a Loblaw's no matter
how cheap their advertized specials are. I might if I thought they
were selling below cost though.
