Ärende: pizza 606
=================
I managed to have pizza for both lunch and dinner yesterday.

Lunch was not unexpected. Every year I have a few concerts
with the Armenians - the routine is that one rehearses on
Saturday from 10 to 3:30 with a break around noon for lunch,
which is pizza, salad, and Coca-Cola products. They used to
serve us chicken kebabs, pide bread, pilaf, and salad, which
of course was better for me, but for a decade at least it has
been pizza.

The group is celebrating its 41st season; I came on around
year 15 and became concertmaster a couple years later and
have so been ever since.

Anyhow, Alice, the conductor's sister, was dishing out the
chow and as she likes me gave me three slices of pizza, so
I ran out of pills. I noshed alone, marking parts with my
right hand while holding a fistful of cheesy pepperoni and
soggy crust in my right.

I've seen musicians come and go. There's one, a clarinetist,
who used to be so cute I could cry. When I'd met her she had
recently been married to a much senior clarinetist who might
have been her teacher or something (he's fairly famous in that
particular world); anyway, she was 24 when I went out on tours
and used to dance with her and stuff (her husband was far too
dignified at the time to do this kind of work), and she was
just so cute, and then I kept in touch with her as she got
this Armenian gig in the '80s, but about 5 years ago she quit
playing to tend her baby (and now two kids; they didn't have
any until she was in her 40s and he probably close to 50), only
this year she was back for reasons unknown, and how old and
tired does she look. She had a slightly lopsided look that
always gave her this intriguing appeal, but now she looks like
an old lady who has had a stroke. My buddy the horn player was
discussing how he used to lust after her twenty-odd years ago,
but how haggard and unattractive she's gotten (I disagree about
the unattractive part).

We rehearsed until 4 (scheduled ending time 3:30), whereupon
Dirk and I just walked out - several others had done so
before - and as we left we heard unpleasant noises coming to
a gradual halt a la Haydn Farewell Symphony.

Anyhow. I had to go to another job, an opera night with a
group that isn't so hot but parties hearty afterward. I've
played with this one for a puny 25 years. The concert was,
shall we say, underwhelming, but afterward my buddy Al (he's
the concertmaster for this one, and I'm his assistant and
sometimes substitute; on a fair number of others the role is
reversed, a sort of chuckle) took me to Bert's, a local joint,
where 30 members of the chorus ordered 12 pizzas and numerous
alcohols. I had another slice of pepperoni pizza and another
of the house specialty, "steak bomb pizza," which is Steak-umm,
mushrooms, peppers, onions, and olive topping and a white
cheezoid substance on top. Bear in mind that I had run out of
pills. After which I discovered that one of the soloists of the
evening had ordered an eggplant and no cheese pizza and had
found it disgusting, so there was some left, and I had a slice
of it, too (it was in fact kind of disgusting, the eggplant
being the thin-cut prebreaded greasy stuff that you get in your
eggplant subs). The bill for drinks and pizzas was close on 500
bucks. I put in 15.

Held it until I got to my buddy Jackie's house (it was really
inconvenient to go back and forth to my own place through the
weekend) and then exploded.

The day had actually gone pretty smoothly, which it wouldn't
have been if the hurricane had showed up ahead of schedule
(it now looks as though it won't come at all).

The major curiosity of the weekend was that there's this piece
by Dvorak called Song to the Moon, which I probably played once
in 39 years of professional music making, and on this day I
played it twice, at both of the venues described.

The major annoyance of the weekend was that my father had been
sick on Thursday, and Uncle S.Y. had called the 911 on him, but
he'd refused to go and had gotten extremely with S.Y. and the
world; on Friday, he was quite badly, so he actually ended up
getting taken to the hospital (seizures and pneumonia in
addition to the rest of it all), and I spent much of my spare
time first cajoling him to pay attention to the doctors and
consoling S.Y. and counseling my brother. In between concerts
and rehearsals and getting in touch with with Carol for moral
support.
