Hi Sean,

SD> In fact, Google Maps says from Savannah to Columbia is a 605 mile
SD> drive (their estimated drive time is 9 hours, 36 minutes).
 SD> http://www.tinyurl.com/328gc9

We did a map quest look-see that gave us a slightly higher (Steve has
the paperwork in the car so I can't check the exact figure.) reading but
it was from Hesperus Ave (unspecified number) to our door. It was over
600 miles but I forget just how long. We plan to do it in a couple of
days, figuring a mid to late morning departure from MD.

SD> From Savannah to Douglasville (which is about 25 miles outside of
SD> Atlanta) is about 271 miles (their estimated drive time is 4 hours, 14
 SD> minutes).
 SD> http://www.tinyurl.com/2pupxx

So figure on about 5 1/2 to 6 hours or so to allow for breaks.

SD> So, yeah, it'd still be closer for them to drive here. Save them time
SD> and gas, which these days costing about $3 around here, is a good
 SD> thing.

We're right around $3.00 or so now--had been up to $3.18 over the
holiday week end but prices started coming down right after it. Just
paid $2.97/9 on post last night and saw it at an El Cheapo for $2.95/9
on White Bluff Road. It is closer to get together with you--and we do
plan on doing so--but we've got a family reunion in NY to go to, want to
visit the Creation Museum in KY and then catch the gathering in MD on
our way home.

Since we spent the first few years of our married life in Swansboro, NC,
we're planning a trip there over Labor Day week end. Not enough time to
stop for a good visit coming back from MD. Our first apartment was a
converted hotel (now torn down) and our bedroom window wasn't too
farfrom the kitchen door of Captain Charlie's restaurant. Don't know if
they're still going but I remember people waiting in line for a good
while to get in on week end summer nights. To us, at the time, the place
was on the high end of our eating out $$ so we rarely went over there.
We much preferred a little place on the causeway or buying from the
boats and cooking it ourselves. There was a good place on Hwy 58 in
Cape Carteret called T&W's Oyster Bar where the food was good--and
plentiful! I'd do good to finish a plateful then and would have more
trouble now.

My in laws stopped here Tuesday night on their way from Florida to NY so
we took them out. The place we wanted to go to (Uncle Bubba's) was
closed for some electrical work so we ended up at the Crab Shack on
Tybee Island. As an appetiser, Steve and I split a dozen steamed
oysters. They were brought out in the shell with a couple of oyster
knives. It's the first time we had to work for them--and Steve worked
about 10 minutes on trying (and succeeding) to get one open. After all
that work, there wasn't a pearl in it. (G) Not a place I'd put first on
the list to go back to--the food was OK but not great. The oysters
definately could have used a better scrubbing before cooking. Other than
the alligator pond, the place seems to serve with the least amount of
fuss/get you out of there quick and serve another party type of service.
The menu was very limited; plates and "napkins" (a roll of towels) were
paper and the forks & glasses, plastic. Each table was seated around a
garbage can so you did your own clean up as you ate. They advertise as
"where the elite eat in their bare feet". As far as I'm concerned, the
elite can continue eating there.

---
Catch you later,
Ruth
