We have driven past that place for years -- and never considered going
in because of its outside appearance. From your review, it sounds as
if our prejudice was unfounded this time. The inside of the "book"
  was much better than the cover:-}}

BTW, that place on the southbound side of route 1 has opened up as a
new restaurant. (the one that used to be Greek, then Indian). I think
it had the word bayou in the name, and so Gail and I stopped by to see
what they had on the menu, etc. after we had gone to Five Guy's for
hamburgers. Not sure if it will be worth going to, but we might try
it some day after they have a chance to get their act together. Looked
like a few newbies opening up their first restaurant. No printed
menus yet -- just a few single sheet flyers. Probably mostly standard
  bar grub.  Karaoke, and a pool table round out the atmosphere:-}}

Our dining experience was not as good as yours. After the graduation
in Westminster of a close family friend, we went to a place in Savage
which is just north of Laurel. It is called Rams Head Tavern. Seems
to be an upscale tavern and restaurant (I think that there is one in
Annapolis as well). They are also a brewery and have a variety of
their own beers on tap. The graduate and several of her fellow
teachers had gone there before for Friday special pub grub and brews.

She had invited a number of folks to come, and so the restaurant had
set aside three large tables -- the waiter who was given the task of
serving us seemed quite displeased, even grumpy. In the end, we only
occupied two of the large tables with about 12 people.

Gail ordered buffalo wings, 12 wing portions for $7.95. She shared
with me and the other two at our table. The wings were quite large
and meaty -- but could have been cooked a bit more to make them
crisper before shaking in the hot sauce. If we were to go back and
order them, we'd specify that they be cooked longer to be crisp. They
were not undercooked to be bloody red like some we got at another
  place once though.

I ordered an appetizer of 2 lb of Fordham Mussels (whatever that means
-- Fordham is the name of the brewery). They were steamed in a
special butter and white wine sauce, served with a crisp baguette
(which did a good job of sopping up the tasty broth after the mussels
were gone). I enjoyed them, although I have had better and
especially bigger ones. Gail did not care for any -- it is one of the
seafoods that she does not like at all.

Our table mates shared an appetizer which was a fruit and brie plate.
The fruit was very good ripe pineapple, some ok cantaloupe and honey
dew melon. All was topped with a few slices of kiwi fruit as well as
honey and sliced almonds. From what I saw, the brie was a very small
portion -- the fruit was a good bit more.

The beers were ok, albeit $3.80 or so per glass.

The main courses were not as good as the appetizers. Gail ordered a
regular hamburger. Listed as 8 oz. Angus Steak burger. She said that
she wanted it rare -- and got a strange look from the waiter, but
nothing said. When the burger came, it was RARE, or even BLEU! The
outside was browned, and the center 1/2 inch was red and cool. This
was another thing that if we went back, we'd know to specify medium
rare or even medium. But you might have liked it. The fries on the
side were crisp, and tasty with some sort of seasoned coating.

My main course was fish & chips. Described as New England cod, hand
dipped in a Fordham beer batter and served with a side of fries. Like
the wings, it was not cooked quite enough. There was a decent
quantity of fish, cut into strips about three inches long and one inch
square. The meat was firm, with large flakes, and probably was cod.
The coating on top was just barely crisp. The coating on the bottom
was wet and soggy -- probably the result of hot portion put onto a
cold plate and steaming itself. I enjoyed the fish, but not the
  soggy crust.

One of the main dishes across from us was a crab melt. Described as
being a super lump crab cake, split on an English muffin -- it was
more like shredded mixed origin crab.

BTW -- we were hoping that it would have been good enough to take you
some day, expecting you to be tempted by the 12 ounce Kobe beef
sirloin steak at $24.95. However, there was nothing there that would
  entice us to go back.

                               Dale Shipp
