Kommentar till en text av MICHAEL LOO
Ärende: Authorities, bah
========================
On 06-18-07 MICHAEL LOO Scribbled to DAVE DRUM about Authorities, bah

ML> ML> DD> It is pretty enforceable. To wit:
ML> ML>There's enforceable and enforceable. I'm wondering how
ML> ML>afraid a Canadian onion vendor is going to be of the Georgia
ML> ML>legislature or the USDA.

ML> DD> About as afraid as a Napa wine producer is of Appellation
ML> DD> d'Origine Controlee laws from France.

ML>Sorta what I thought - the muscle is where the cash is.

Dirty Dave's Axiom of Living #3: In trying to understand the
inexplicable - always, follow the money!!!

ML> -=> Dave Drum said to Ruth Haffly <=-

ML> DD> When I was in high school I happened to go to "THE" high school
ML> DD> (of 3 public high schools). Many of the parents were of the
ML> DD> country club set, very few were considered "blue collar" and it
ML> DD> was considered a "rich student body". Most senior classes put
ML> DD> on a prom featuring a major touring band, at one of the (three)

ML>Speaking of where the cash is. So the snobbish ass ends up doing the
ML>clever and right thing, and the assistant principal is thwarted. So
ML>far so good. But on what authority did the assistant principal act,
ML>and what became of the snake afterward?

Pretty much on his own authority with the tacit acquiescence of a
weak(ish) school principal. He was recuperating from a broken jaw
compliments of yours truly (a completely separate deal) suffered in the
week before graduation. He was "eased" into retirement by the school
board a few years later. Those "country club" parents I mentioned tended
to be the sort who wound up on the school board ... which operated on
the Golden Rule

ML> DD> So, the class officers hired a local four piece garage band ($50
ML> DD> for a four hour gig to give you an idea of their quality - even
ML> DD> in 1960) spent about $22.50 on red and black crepe paper
ML> DD> streamers and another three bucks on Scotch tape to hold up the
ML> DD> streamers. Then donated the rest of the treasury to St. Jude's
ML> DD> Children's Hospital which was then in construction.

ML>Definitely the clever and right thing.

It was a popular decision with nearly all the student body. Not nearly
so popular with Smiling Jack and his sycophants.

ML>For our sophomore dance, which I attended, uselessly, we hired a
ML>bunch of classmates who turned out to be excellent. I've perhaps
ML>told the story of my junior prom (I didn't go); by the time senior
ML>prom came around, nobody I knew was involved in that kind of thing
ML>any more - we were all too busy working for Eugene McCarthy and
ML>the like.

ML> DD> Then a consortium of the higher income parents got together and
ML> DD> sponsored a visit from the Ralph Martierie Orchestra at the St.
ML> DD> Nicholas Hotel Ballroom - On June 10. The Friday AFTER
ML> DD> graduation. The "official" prom had more faculty chaperones in
ML> DD> attendance than students. The after school was out
ML> DD> "invitational" event was very well attended, indeed. And the
ML> DD> school administration could only grind their molars and be hot
ML> DD> under the collar.

ML>So why did they try the same trick the next year?

Some people never seem to learn. Witness our current President.

ML> DD> They were really hot under the collar when some of the graduated
ML> DD> class who were not attending the "invite" went up the school's
ML> DD> smokestack and painted "THE LAST LAUGH" in _BIG_ letters that
ML> DD> and could be seen far wide. These were sandblasted away before
ML> DD> classes resumed in September.

ML>As evidenced by:

ML> DD> 1961's Prom was pretty much a repeat of 1960 ... including
ML> DD> painting the chimney with "LAUGH AGAIN". This stayed on the
ML> DD> stack until it was torn down. Bv)=

I got to checking with one of the younger brothers who was in on the
second lettering job as to where the Class of '61 treasury went. I was
in the bleedin' Navy at that time and such was not reported in the local
birdcage liner (I did subscribe by mail for a few months).

Oddly enough another Memphis charity was selected after religious
snobbery nixed a local Roman Catholic worthy cause, St. Monica's Hall, a
shelter for unwed mothers (bastardy was a major no-no in the early 60s
if you remember). So, they picked the Florence Crittenden Home for Unwed
Mothers in Memphis, TN. Amid all the japes about direct contributions of
clientele, etc.

Tom had no idea how they came up with the Crittenden home. Some of the
$$$ parents were aghast because of appearances. But, this class and my
class and then next few after class of '61 ditched their parents innate
stick-in-the-mud conservatism and became the generation that got its
collective heads busted by Daley's Police Riot at the '68 Democratic
National Convention.
