After due thought I have given up that thought.

What do they say when you point out to them this contradiction?  Or do
they just quote the Prohibition inspired anti-alcohol attitudes because
they think that is what is expected of them?  After all, some of our
most famous wineries were started by doctors so that their patients
could have access to health-giving wines.

That would be reasonable.

I think this concept came from the law enforcers, who advise that more
than a certain number of standard drinks (I've forgotten how many) in a
particular time period (also forgotten) would put car drivers over the
legal blood alcohol level.  (0.05% blood alcohol level.)

I would guestimate a small glass as being about 50 to 80 ml of
unfortified wine - a little less than a standard drink.  As a standard
drink is 12.6 ml of pure ethanol, this equates to about 90 ml of an
average 14% alcohol Shiraz, and about 8 drinks per bottle.  Therefore,
if you share a bottle equally every day with a friend, you will both be
healthy and have a long life.  My almost empty 10 litre cask of Kay's
Amery Red is labelled as containing 111 standard drinks.

Some idle calculation has indicated that so far in my life I have drunk
the contents of an average semi-trailer road tanker...

I have seen vegetarian beef tendons, prawns and scallops offered for
sale in the local "Lucky Asian".  I was tempted to get some to serve to
you when you were here, but fortunately for you I later forgot.

      Title: GLUHWEIN
 Categories: Jamie4, I/net, Drinks, German, Euro-c
      Yield: 1 Servings
 
      2 c  Wine, red, inexpensive
      1 c  Water
    1/2 c  Sugar, castor
           - to 2/3 cup (or to taste)
      3    Cloves
    1/2    Cinnamon stick
      1 sl Lemon rind
           -with white part removed.
 
  Bring water, sugar, and all the spices (everything except the red
  wine) to a slow boil in a small pot and stir it until all the sugar
  dissolves. Remove the pot from the heat and stir in the red wine.
  Then put the pot back on the heat, and warm it until it is just
  simmering again (i.e. - don't boil it).  Strain it in to a cup and
  enjoy!
