 SD> I could understand it not working on squirrels.  Those little guys are

Nasty little critters, but clever enough - I've had friends
rig up the most ingenious anti-vandalism devices to protect
birdseed, and the squirrels almost always figure out a way to
defeat them. The fact that they can fall a long way without
too much damage aids them in this.

There have been suburban and even a few urban sightings of
black bears in New England and the mid-Atlantic. As long as
the deer supply is okay, they pose no major danger, and as you
know, the population of white-tails has been increasing to the
point that they're a nuisance in a lot of places, thanks to
the anti-hunters who have watched Bambi too many times.

I was wondering if they were a substitute for tomatillos
(which I also use in great moderation) in the original recipe.

Brunswick Stew
cat: Arkansas, game, main
servings: 8

6 squirrels, cut up
2 chicken thighs
4 qt chicken broth
2 lg onion, sliced
2 ts salt
1 ts black pepper
1/2 ts cayenne pepper
1 lb Lean smoked ham, diced
56 oz (2 cn) whole tomatoes
20 oz (2 boxes) frozen lima beans
4 lg Irish potatoes, diced
20 oz (2 boxes) frozen corn
4 Tb butter

Place squirrel, chicken thighs, chicken broth, onions,
salt and pepper in large pot. Simmer until squirrel is
tender, about 1 1/2 hr. Remove from heat. When
squirrel and chicken are cool, remove from bones and
return to pot.

Add tomatoes, ham, lima beans, potatoes and corn.
Simmer another hr. Stir frequently to prevent
sticking. Remove from heat, stir in butter. Add
additional salt & pepper if needed. Serve in bowl with
favorite bread.
