==============================
-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> This is a subject I have thought about, and I tend to agree with you.
GJ> The efficiency of the digestive system is different between
 GJ> individuals.

ML> I haven't figured out what a constipated or an overactive
ML> gut is considered more efficient. Mine tends to be a fast
ML> digestive tract, one day or less, and chiles make it faster.

ML> I sometimes get ring of fire, which is not always directly
ML> proportional to the heat of the variety eaten. Habanero ROF
ML> is very bad, but crushed Italian flakes on pizza may make
ML> the worst, as the preparation is high in fiber (lots of
ML> seeds), and the dairy product has a large laxative effect.

That agrees with my theory as to the efficiency of digestion (defined
as %age of nutrient extracted from the fuel, and transformed into
energy or stored fats) being time-related. If your inadvertent
ingestion of a lactose product results in an increase of peristalticaly
induced velocity of masticated food through your intestines (ie gives
you the runs), some of the capsaicin would be expected to remain viable
and its effect noticed,

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Hap Newsom <=-

GJ> During WW2, with a lot of hard work, my parents' garden supplied a
GJ> large proportion of the food for a family of 4. We are a lot lazier
GJ> now, and kids are strangely reluctant to desert their electronic toys
GJ> for the joys of collecting manure and digging it into an onion plot.

 ML> I don't think there's a justification for onion plots, as
ML> onions are cheaper in the store, just as good from the store,
ML> and need processing. Berries and greens and tomatoes, maybe.

In those days (1939 - 1945) many of the farmers had gone off to war,
and what food was produced was shipped out to feed the warriors, so the
civilian population was left at the mercy of General Shortages. That
applied to everything except wheat and a few other very basic foods. At
home we even grew potatoes as well as onions, carrots and parsnips.
Now, of course, production of all those basic vegetables is mechanised,
and they are so cheap that growing is not worth doing.

GJ> At present I pay Aus$1.09 per kilolitre (say, $5 per 1000 gallons),
GJ> and the price is expected to increase considerably in the future.

ML> That's pretty cheap, considering the supply and demand.

My water bill is about $350 pa, including a supply charge, but after
deducting pensioner concessions.

HN> and plans that secured water for them for future growth...which panned
HN> out quite well for them, not so well for the people that followed and
HN> inhabited what was once barren desert (and still pretty much is now).
GJ> For which, Arnie's mob can be thankful, and hopefully enough of the
GJ> present generation will have similar forward thinking to provide for
 GJ> the future generations.

 ML> There's a big old ocean.

But a lot of energy is required to extract fresh water from it.

GJ> That area of South Australia actually has quite a high rainfall, and
GJ> the swamps were kept wet by rows of ancient sandhills between the
GJ> swamp and the sea. Drains were cut through these sandhills 80 years
GJ> ago, to turn the area into pasture, and dairy farms. It would be easy
GJ> to block off these drains and allow the swamps to re-form, but would
GJ> displace the dairy farmers now living there. The whole area is very
GJ> flat, so dams cannot be built. A difficult problem.

ML> Why not just excavate a hole.

As I explained to Hap, my idea is to excavate a series of shallow holes
over the several hundred square kilometres, with collection drains
radiating from them, and a pump in each hole, connected to a central
main water pipe taking the stuff to where it is most needed.

Perhaps the displaced dairy farmers could take up fish farming...

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Catfish and Buttered And Cheddared Cheezy Grits
 Categories: Fish
      Yield: 4 Servings

8 oz Farm raised catfish fillet

Lightly Season to taste: salt, pepper, garlic powder Wrap in clear
wrap. Keep chilled until needed. For best results Refrigerate
overnight. 1. Heat cooking oil to 350 degrees. 2. Lightly coat
catfish in flour or yellow cornmeal/flour mixture (50/50 split) 3.
Put fillet into oil. Fry until golden brown. The inside of the fillet
should be bright white and flakey.

Grits: Follow instructions on back of the box.

The secret to great grits is a whisk. Use a whisk instead of a spoon
to blend your grits. Bring water to boil. Add salt and butter to
taste. Use whisk to slowly blend in grits. Remove from heat once the
  grits are smooth and creamy.

  Cheezy Grits:

Add 1/2 cup of sharp cheddar cheese per every serving. Use whisk to
blend cheese into grits. Grits should be a deep yet bright orange
color. Put catfish and grits on same plate. Season grits with salt
and pepper to taste. Season catfish with hot sauce to taste.
