I think that 4.01 is the pinnacle of Microsoft achievement.

78s had too many false data inclusions in the manufacturing
process. Vinyls are the best way (he said, staring at a
thousand or more, some scarce and likely not to be updated -
who is going to want to transfer the Barsukov violin concerto
onto DVD?). Did you ever hear, by the way, the assertion that
recordings made in the early days of acoustic recording, when
musicians used to play into a horn attached to a recording
needle, sound much better when played back through a horn?

CD recording technology used upon stainless steel media and then
stored in a dry environment might be an answer.

If you'd ever played the parlor game "Telephone," you'd think
twice about claiming retention of original data.

   The important
 GJ> feature of this form of data recording and transfer is that no other

The other important feature, though, is that the amount of data
is limited by brain capacity. There are individuals who are gifted
with the capacity of retaining every word of a document so long as,
say, the Brittanica, but these are not likely to be able to do much
more than that. And the transfer of vast amounts of information via
oral means would be enormously time-consuming. Further - though we
don't like to admit it - the medium is quite perishable. A few
well-placed viruses, or less subtly, lead projectiles, and there
goes your civilization out the window. Even better, a virus could
cause hopeless scrambling of data, the same way it does in real life.

Espagnole
cat: sauce, basic, railroad
yield: 1 gallon

2 veal shin bones
paprika
2 Tb melted fat
2 c carrots sliced thin
2 c onions sliced thin
s & p
2 bay leaves
4 allspice berries
1 garlic clove, minced
1/2 c flour
28 oz can tomatoes
6 qt beef stock

Remove meat from bones; cut small. Crack bones.
Dust meat and bones with paprika in a roasting
pan; drizzle with fat and roast at 400F for 1 hr.
Add vegetables and spices and dust with salt and
pepper. Continue to roast 30 min. Dust with flour
and roast again until flour is browned. Remove
everything except accumulated fat to a stockpot.
Add tomatoes and stock; bring to a boil, reduce
heat, and simmer 10-12 hr. Cool and strain.
Refrigerate until needed.
