Carcinus maenus only gets to be about 10cm wide at it's biggest and widest 
stage. It is a voracious predator on small shellfish and oysters, and even 
other crabs in it's size range or even larger. It readily preys on juvenile
native 
crab populations as well. I see no indications that it is nasty tasting but no 
reports of anyone eating a lot of them either....in any case at 10cm wide at 
the carapace they don't make much impact in the meat dept!

Always with the "are they edible" (grin) well I suppose they are...but they 
taste nasty bad as they exude an acidic slime as a defense...even the green 
crabs won't eat em! And we tried to get them to as well! I must add though 
that we are not totally sure of the taxonomic identification of the philine in 
question....is it orientalis from Hong Kong and the Chinese coasta? Or is it 
philine Auriformis from New Zealand? There are very few clues to work 
with...and it looks like it will have to be settled by DNA analysis to be
certain 
of the answer. As to what they are they are a sea slug about as long as your 
pinky finger. Pale translucent white, you can see the gizzard plates in it's 
body that it uses to grind up the shells of the tiny bivalves it feeds upon.
