Ärende: Picnic 02 - Breakfast/Lunch
===================================
Friday breakfast:

Scrapple - Locally-made Rapa-brand scrapple in two varieties, regular
and "extra-hot". The regular was good, a little less sagey than I
usually like, with a nice black-pepper flavor. The "extra-hot" was,
unfortunately, not very hot but rather like a mild version of my own
home-made which tends to be rather a bit spicier. And yet, it was
scrapple and as such quite delicious.

I prepared it two ways: Thinly slice and cooked for a long time over
relatively low heat, to make an extra crispy almost cracker-like
product; and the usual - crispy outside, creamy inside. I think that
the group ate about four pounds of it (of which Michael and I might
have accounted for approximately half.)

Sausage - Bob Evans, in 1-pound bulk tubes. On the lean side, but
quite flavorful. Old Bob, who is in heaven now, was famous for his
sausage and rightly so.

Michael noticed lovely brown bits clinging to the bottom of the
sausage pan and whipped up a batch of cream gravy, which went pretty
quickly (folks were having it on toast, I guess. I just poured some
on a couple of slices of sausage.)

Lunch:

Stopped first at H Mart (Han Ah Rheum) an Asian Supermarket in some
ways as good and some ways better than our local Dong's Supermarket.
Maryanne and Lynn stayed there for lunch at their food court, while
the Shipps, Glen, Joan, Michael, Dave Drum, and I headed to the Pit
Beef place up the road.

The pit beef joint is a squat little yellow shed with a tall green
roof. The inside is dominated by a huge fire pit, next to which
is a small serving area. Customers go in one door, order lunch,
pick it up at the serving area, and exit through a second door.
I ordered a beef sandwich, rare, with salt and pepper. The beef
was indeed blood-rare and dripping with juices and it was fantastic.
I got an order of fries with gravy to go with, and a pickle. The wets
were a little disappointing - I would have liked them fried a bit
crispier - but I couldn't complain about the gravy that was on them.
It was a generous dollop of real beef gravy, not some nasty powdered
stuff. I had a few bites and then shared them around.

After lunch, we went back to H Mart to pick up the rest of the gang
and do some snackie shopping. Later, at Casa Shipp, we broke out
some of those snacks and more:

- Dried Sardine Crunchies - I bought these at Dong's, thinking that
they were simply dried fish with sesame seeds, but it turned out
that they were candied! Kind of a "fish brittle" I guess. Though
I bought them for the bizarreness factor, they turned out pretty
enjoyable. Glen doctored some up to make them spicier by shaking
some in a cup of cayenne pepper.

- Kirin Crab Cracker - Gentle kani aroma, with a texture quite a bit
like shrimp chips, though somewhat denser. Sweet, almost vanilla
taste along with the crab flavor. We ended up going though about
three bags of these - they were popular with everyone, especially
  Lynn.

- Ambasa and Milkis - two Korean carbonated soft drinks that looked
interesting. Both were a strange, translucent white in color and
contained some milk; both were a kind of melon/citrus flavor with
an almost yogurty (sour milk?) tang. Ambassa was sweeter. Lynn
preferred the Milkis, and on the way home we stopped at H Mart again
and picked up a couple of bottles for the road.

- Rice Cakes - these were being made fresh at H Mart, and they were
giving away free samples as the cakes popped off the machine.
Marvelous, head and shoulders above the styrofoam disks that pass
for corporate-made rice cakes. We bought a bag of them and now
I wish I had bought more, because they're all gone and I'm sad.
