=======================
Hi Carol,

RH> Cut the sugar in half if the fruit is sweet. Any more than that and t
RH> structure of the "cake" part won't work as well.

CS> Ok. Will keep that in mind. You know we are almost 'diabetic
CS> cookery' here except for the starch part, so 'too sweet' for us is
CS> like folks who say campbells soup is too salty. We have a smaller
CS> tolerance for the sweet taste.

I know, and this is down home southern cobbler, from the land of sweet
tea. (G)

CS> The fruit alone would provide all the 'sweet' we really want but a
CS> little brown sugar is acceptable. The cookery to work right though
CS> needing more sugar, might make me adapt that one. Can it be cut down
CS> to a 2 cup total yield? Otherwise, we'd not eat more and just waste
CS> the food as it went bad in the fridge. (We do like a little sweets,
CS> but not the volume others commonly like).

OK, if you've got a small (6"x6" or so) baking pan try 1/4c each of the
flou, sugar & milk, 1/2 tsp of baking powder and half to 2/3 cup of
fruit. It should make enough for one meal's dessert.

RH> Enjoy your apple pie--do you still have ice cream to go on the top? (G

CS> We get ice cream now and again in smaller containers. Pints work for a
 CS> 2 week time here with 3 of us <g>. I have 1 of them but it's
CS> strawberry. Thats ok. We won't eat the whole apple pie anyways. Most
CS> (probably all but 3 small slices) will go to neighbors.

Try it warmed, with warm milk for breakfast. (G)

CS> (Elise here. I got what Carol calls 'dibs'. My boys love apple
CS> cinnimon pie. I got her amish bread recipe too. It's good. She has
CS> to cross cut it to fit the bread keeper as it is too tall).

Hi Elise,

Long time, no hear. I understand "dibs"; you're lcuky to get carol's
pie. Do your boys do as we were taught, if one splits, the other
chooses? Our 2 girls corrupted that into "I spit, you chew" or "You
spit, I chew". ONe time they were visiting one of our son in law's
aunts and came out with that, then had to apologise and explain
themselves. She thought it was funny but decided to use the one
splitting, the other choosing idea with her kids. Are you planning to
continue on Fido when Carol leaves? Hope so. (G)

CS> -- slight break obviously. That was Elise. She says hello. Got dibs
CS> on the rest of the apple pie <g>. Meekans are hitting heavy so she
CS> grabed Charlotte with her to go get some. Seems the boys all 'flocked
CS> away' someplace and she wants someone to help carry a goodlie load

Yummy! At least you have those as one of your last sweet memories of
Japan.

CS> expensive here and extra freezers being rare). She dropped off 4
CS> small chicken carcasses and picked up some chicken stock. She;s fast
CS> so it's all in the momma crock with water making more stock now.

As I've got to do with a turkey breast carcass.

CS> I asked her to get us some peeled garlic and whatever looks good for a
CS> cabbage then handed off 300yen to Charlotte (plus 700 yen for just
 CS> 'fun' and water).

Sounds like a good idea to me. Nice "tip" for Charlotte too. (G)

CS> They'll be back in about 1 hour or a little more. Meantime, I get the
CS> TV all to me and the computer!

 CS> Hehe Mommie is devious.

Good thing Charlotte doesn't read Fido. (G)

CS> weather station on the other side of the mountain so it's always at
CS> least 10 degrees cooler than this side.

RH> But, you know the end is in sight. We're still adjusting to 4 distinc
RH> seasons vs the sort of slide into each other like we had in AZ and HI.
RH> AZ did have a hot summer and (short) cold winter but the differences
RH> seem more distinct out here.

CS> I got used to 4 distinct seasons out here though 'winter' seldom has
CS> real snow. Sasebo is just south enough, we get some but almost never
CS> sticks. If it were not for the air current that sweeps us over from
CS> Siberia, we probably wouldnt have even that (it warms alot before it
CS> hits us but is still cold).

I do miss the maples turning color in the fall tho. No matter where
we've been (except Fort Devens) we've never had that. Up at Devens we
had a knock out drop dead gorgeous fall--but then a fair amount of snow
after that until we left in late January. That was fall of 92 and we've
not seen another one as pretty since.

Catch you later,
