============================
Hiya Glen!

-> -> HN> into the wilds of the west coast waters. While many might think
that
-> -> HN> would actually be a fine idea (one of the most common
introduction
-> -> HN> vectors is people releasing their "favorite" animal into the
local
-> -> HN> environment) it's not something the labs wish to happen.
Therefore all
->  ->
-> -> That has happened far too often, all over the world. Thus carp are
-> -> found in rivers and goats everywhere.
->  ->
-> HN> Hmmm rabbits in Australia comes to mind for me!
->
-> Rabbits, then foxes to eat the rabbits, except that they ate the
-> small marsupial bentongs and bilbies instead. Buffaloes and pigs
-> fouling swamps in the tropical north, camels in the desert Centre,
-> horses (brumbies) in the mountains, sparrows, starlings and Burmese
-> doves in the cities, cats killing off small marsupials outside the
-> towns, and even some ostriches competing against the emus.
-> Unfortunately most of the Australian marsupials are not very bright, or
-> otherwise equipped to defend themselves against the foreign invaders
-> (including, of course, the gun-toting bipedal ones).
->
Yep OZ has had it's share of ecological mishaps! I think you forgot rats
and goats...(and some say sheep as well!).

-> -> HN> The lab uses red abalone which is commercially raised ( they
don't get
-> -> HN> any wild stock) as opposed to black abalone which is much more
rare
-> -> HN> protected by law as well.(and not commercially raised). Since
these
->  ->
-> -> I haven't come across the red abalone. As far as I know ours are
all
-> -> blacks and wild, therefore very expensive. Mainly exported to be
eaten
-> -> by rich gourmets in the countries to the North.
->  ->
-> HN> I certainly hope you lot do a better job of maintaining them than
our
->  HN> lot has!
->
-> As I mentioned previously, the Laws on size and bag limits are strictly
-> enforced to protect the industry, and that seems to be working.
->
Well at least you seem to have learned from your earlier mistakes! (grin)

-> -> > So what did you do with the shells? In NZ a lot of cheap
jewellery is
-> -> > made from "pawa" shell. With the outer layers removed with acid,
some
-> -> > quite brilliant colours are exposed.
-> -> HN> So far I have not had time to do very much with them...but
jewelry is
-> -> HN> on my list of things to try. When you grind on them however you
get
-> -> HN> same smell as you do when your own teeth are being drilled by
the
-> -> HN> dentist...not the most pleasing of mental images to deal with
(at
->  ->
-> -> I know that horrid smell of burnt bone! I have a few shells lying
-> -> around at home, but mainly just use them for holding trinkets.
->  ->
-> HN> If you ever get to visit Bodega Bay you'll see abalone shells
(bigger
-> HN> than your head! ) being used as decorative additions to fences and
-> HN> such.A good sized abalone often runs over 12" in shell size (long
->
-> That would be a monster! Very old, too. The last time I visited the
-> southern tip of NZ I met a man who was collecting empty pawa shells
-> washed up on the beach. He gave me a few. In the nearby town of Bluff
-> there is a house devoted to paua, with all kinds of jewellery and
-> decorations. The whole wall of one room is covered with paua shells.
->
-> There was also a framed letter from the Queen, congratulating the
-> previous owners (now deceased) for attaining the age of 100, so perhaps
-> there is something healthy and life-prolonging about eating abalone.
->
hmmm you may have a point there lad! Let me know when you get your letter!
chat with you soon
