-=> Quoting Michael Loo to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> Noted that she hadn't gone on to read "Paradise Regained". One book
ML> I once took a course on Milton, and that was required
 ML> reading. I didn't read it.

If I did, I didn't remember it. Was it Tennyson who wrote, "Milton,
thou shouldst be living at this hour/ England hath need of thee..."?
Milton was revered more in his own life than by posterity.

GJ> normally dry and cool in summer. If your New England basements are so
GJ> soggy that they need dehumidifiers and sump pumps to drain them, that
GJ> would add considerably to the running cost. I had understood that the
GJ> original purpose of basements in earlier days was for storage of root
GJ> vegetables and fruit during your inhospitable winters.

ML> Originally, houses were built only on lots suitable
ML> for house building. Now, with the population density,
ML> they're built anywhere that isn't positively under
ML> water. And the water table is pretty high most places
ML> here - too high for a root cellar to be worthwhile.

My former father-in-law inherited an old house in Adelaide which had a
large cellar. The former owner, an aunt, had been prevented by
arthritis from visiting the cellar for the previous 20 years, so had
left her collection of bottles of dusty port and brandy untouched.
Unfortunately by the time I met his daughter and thus gained an entry
into the family, he had happily disposed of the treasures.

There was no air-conditioning, so at the height of mid-summer, the
family retired to the cool cellar to sleep.

-=> Glen Jamieson said to Jim Weller <=-
JW> They were bread dumplings? Boiled bread dough?
 GJ> farinacious cannon balls
JW> "Farinacious"? I looked it up and was surprised to find out it was a
 JW> real word!

And I know (now) I mis-spelled it!

GJ> You should not have been surprised. Mostly I use secondhand words,
GJ> and only rarely need to invent a new one. I have to admit that MLoo is
GJ> more creative than me in that respect...
 ML>
ML> You just alter already-existing words; I make up new
ML> ones altogether. But not quotidianally.

A good word, and very timely. I suppose you were aware that you posted
that word on the 10th anniversary of the princess's death, and you
intended it to be split "Quoti/diana/lly, and not "quotidi/anally"?

How would you define it if you were entering it into the OD?

Botanists can also be quite creative - and self-glorifying.

           KAKADU PLUMS
           Terminalia ferdinandiana

Kakadu plums are the remarkable fruit of the Northern Territory's
kakadu plum or billy goat plum tree. The fruit resembles an immature
olive more than a plum and it has a woody central stone like an olive
too. The kakadu plum has the highest content of vitamin C of all
fruits, worldwide. The taste of the fruit is acidic and refreshing
with a slight citrus aftertaste. The fruit is well suited to jams,
jellies and chutneys. [ view image ]
