Ärende: Tobacco Chicken 472
===========================
DS> And, thanks for clearing up this mystery.

No prob - when I find some annoying little thing that just
has to be resolved, I waste, er, spend up to all of my
time and energy until I've figured it out. In this case,
I really, really did have the urge to find out.

DS> Russian "tabaka" actually does mean "tobacco." So I was all
DS> over linguistic sites through the weekend, trying to track
DS> down something else related to the cooking method.

Now, the method you previously described led me to think on
the frying of onions, and I did recall a dish called "tobacco
onions," so called for reasons fairly obvious to anyone who
has ever opened a pouch of loose tobacco. Further research
indicates that Dean Fearing is credited with inventing the
term, if not the dish (which is commonly known as "onion
strings"), so that can't have anything to do with chicken
tabaka.

-=> Dave Sacerdote said to Dave Drum <=-

BF> Getting a little testy are we? I have at least half a brain, but I
BF> fail to see why you should care or comment on how how or why I buy
 BF> chicken.
DD> Don't take it personal (if you did) as it is my general rant
 DD> #32 against waste.
DS> For many people who may not have the inclination to use skin, bones,
DS> etc. buying whole chickens or split breasts or whatever is a false
DS> economy. They may be perfectly willing to pay extra for the
DS> convenience of having the skinning and boning done by someone else,
DS> and for them, having skins and bones that get thrown away is the
 DS> true waste.

There's economic waste, too. How long does it take to skin and
bone a chicken breast even for a total newbie? Only a paralyzing
phobia of Salmonella or the terminal klutzitude that would get
someone to the hospital with a knife wound should prevent them
from boning out a chicken breast. When thirty seconds (you, Dave,
or I could easily do it in half that) and 99c produces the same
product as $3.99 and having the meat robot do it, what's wasteful
now? And, if I may be allowed to go on my own rant, in case they
are so spooked by ribcages and other reminders of mortality, I
submit to you that they would be better off vegetarians.

Tobacco Onions 1
cat: side, garnish, ingredient
servings: 6

5 c peanut oil (or other light oil)
1 c all-purpose flour
1 ts paprika
1 ts salt
1 ts black pepper
1/2 ts cayenne pepper
2 lg yellow or sweet onions, peeled,
- thinly sliced, and separated into rings

Heat oil to 350F in deep saucepan over medium heat. In
medium bowl combine and mix dry ingredients, then add onions
and toss to coat. Remove onion rings, shaking off excess flour
mixture. Fry a few rings at a time for 10 min, until crisp
and golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Tobacco onions are easy to prepare and can also be used as a
side dish or an accompaniment to hamburgers.
