Ärende: Enough.
===============
Hi Joan,

RH> room. Heard someting the other day about the average kitchen in the 50s
RH> being 90 square feet, today it's closer to 2000 sq ft. I said
RH> something to Steve about wondering if we even have 90; he's not sure
RH> (would have to measure) and this place was built last year.

JM> A few thoughts on that...The word "kitchen" might
JM> describe quite a variety of rooms with different
JM> ranges of functions, cooking always included, of
JM> course. I have seen one of the small old kitchens,

I measured & we have a 10'x12' (in theory) kitchen. We do have a bigger
dining room but the kitchen has the pantry space. Floor space is about
4'6" x 8',total counter space is about 10', divided into 4 smalll
sections of 2" or less and one longer. The lower cabinets (3 full size,
1 half size) all have a half shelf as the top one. There are also 3
full size upper cabinets, a half size one and small ones (no shelves,
just space) above the fridge and stove. The "pantry" has 6 shelves,
divided by 2 doors, two shelves on top, 4 on the bottom. They measure
18" across and 24 " deep.

JM> In my Mom's house, the kitchen also houses the
JM> laundry facilities! Very convenient! So the modern
JM> "kitchen" is much more a multifunctional family
JM> room than a simple cooking place to which one

Ours is more a reversion back to the older times.

JM> I went through a spate of house-hunting some years
JM> back, before my job situation changed such that I
JM> I looked at a lot of houses and kitchens! The
JM> house I should have bought (not the one I actually
JM> bid on but backed out of) had the hugest kitchen

We've had places with bigger kitchens, including some that held the
laundry facilities and one where it was eat in--no space provided for a
"dining room". Most places the dining area has been an area off the
living room. I've lived in older military housing that had larger
kitchens for just meal prep; it was a shock that this one was so small
for being so new.

JM> The owner who had it custom built didn't have a
JM> full basement dug, just enough for the washer/
JM> dryer which I would rather have on the main floor

I'd rather have laundry on the main floor too, especially seeing the
problems my parents are having as they age.

JM> Sounds pound-foolish to me, as countertops are
JM> easy to upgrade later, but enlarging a basement
JM> would be prohibitive! And there was no practical

Well, that was the buyer/bulder's choice. I agree, it was foolish but
there may be an underlying reason we don't know about.

JM> Sigh. Still, I should have bought it, I realize now.
JM> It was suitably sized for a single person, one story
JM> except for the tiny basement (my family seems to
JM> have hip problems in older age, so stairs aren't
JM> a good idea), and the main bedroom opened to a
JM> screened porch! And in a good neighborhood, to
JM> boot. The road not taken, and now it's too late.

We've still got a while before we'll be home owners (if ever). But,
we're looking for a one story place as I've found "running the stairs"
isn't as easy as it used to be. I can do it now but what's to say I can
in a few years. But one thing for sure, the place we do settle in will
have a bigger kitchen than this one.

Catch you later,
Ruth
