Tastes mostly at Carol's -

Kris Pinot Grigio - with a stupid name like this you'd expect
it was from Singapore, or at least Australia. No, it's from
the Venezie, i.e., actual Pinot Grigio country. On opening,
an outrageous tropical and stone fruity aroma, more on the
palate with a bit of citrus lingering on to the finish. Not
horrendously sweet - a decent warm-weather drink, but it
wasn't so nice that Carol and I would have more than one glass.

Pennsylvania Dutch brand eggnog "made with real dairy cream,
rum, brandy and blended whisky, made & bottled by Dairyland
Distillers Co., Phila., PA, 14.75% Alc/Vol (29.5 Proof)" -
I was looking to find room in the fridge door for the above
bottle of wine and encountered this stuff, leftover from at
least one Christmas ago. I took a taste to see if it was
worth throwing away and discovered to my surprise that it was
not horrendously awful and actually tasted more of booze
than of nutmeg or even sugar. It was a slightly sour and
alcoholic version of real eggnog, or at least as close as
makes no difference. There were a couple ounces of minced
ham left over from another experiment, so I decided to make
a sort of ham stroganoff - boiled down a half cup of this
eggnog until it was caramelized and used that as the basis of a
sauce. This turned out to be a mistake, as there was far more sugar
than was discernible from earlier impression (I guess the booze
masked the sugar), and I ended up with candied ham bits to put
on my pasta. I lunched on this anyhow, because waste is bad.

NEW! Oreo Cakesters soft snack cakes - these are soft fudgy
cakes with white fluffy fat and sugar sandwiched inside in
imitation of Oreos. Sort of like Devil Dogs or Hostess Cupcakes
in disguise. Only not so good, the dark outside not substantially
chocolaty, the fluffy inside putting one in mind of athersclerotic
plaque.

Trader Joe's Cherry Almond Clusters, a blend of oat clusters,
cherries, almonds & cornflakes - a mishmash of ingredients,
very abundant nasty-pink "oat clusters" that tasted like cherry
cough syrup, cornflakes that tasted like cornflakes dusted with
cherry cough syrup, cherries, that were more glace than anything
else, and almond slivers that tasted like cherry cough syrup.
I am hugely unimpressed with most of the newer TJ's products -
they seem like floor sweepings or at best "let's give the surplus
stuff a fancy name and sell it at a premium to the brand-conscious
price-unconscious (but having gone to graduate school, they imagine
themselves price-conscious) upper middle masses.

In both of the above cases I wished I were eating something else
ending in sters, even canned oysters.

Halls Fruit Breezers Cool Berry pectin throat drops. Tastes
like Hawaiian Punch in a convenient small package. No
mintiness at all. Active ingredient: pectin 7 mg (I kid you
not). Inactive ingredients: Blue 2, flavors, glucose syrup,
partially hydrogenated cottonseed oil, red 40, sucrose,
titanium dioxide (in that order). Doesn't do a whole lot
for or against a cough.
