Well around here Lowe's does exactly that. I think part of the strategy may
be that there is a ready made customer base right near by. Do you remember
Mega Foods grocery? Well Lowe's bought the property, canceled the lease of
the grocery, moved em out...and bulldozed the whole site and built a Lowe's
there...all because there's a Home Depot about 1/2 mile away! 

-> Speaking of which, I don't remember if I said this, but I recently
-> went to Tim Horton's, just for giggles, and tried samples of
-> three of their doughnuts - the cake ones were average, the honey-
-> dips were well below average, and the sour-cream glazed were quite
-> good, actually, but not enough for me to actually seek out a Tim
-> Horton's, especially if there's a Dunkin's nearby. I also had a
-> hazelnut Hot Smoothee, which turns out to be an inferior sort of
-> caffe latte with many shots of syrup, enough to give one diabetes

Stopped into a Tim Horton's in Calgary a couple of years ago...was not
terribly impressed...about the same as Dunkin Donuts or Krispy Kreme. I got
spoiled there were a few mom and pop donut places here in Tacoma when I was
in highschool...and they were GOOOOOOD! Nothing since has been as wonderful
as those!

I did well enough, but didn't really enjoy it...and when I no longer needed
to go further I didn't. Had friends though who were math majors and they
"spoke" math as a language, just like I spoke chemistry as a language at 
the time.
