GJ>Remember xxcarol is the holder of a USA passport. Think how us
GJ>foreigners are treated! I was not really surprised to be singled out

CS> Hehe well, I've been singled out too a few times in other countries.
CS> The OZ inspection though quite reasonable once explained, is quite
CS> intrusive in a different way. It's all to good reason though. To
CS> protect the place from odd stuff entering it. Main problem we had
CS> last time was they didnt want to give us enough dumpsters because they
CS> didnt understand how much trash a ship of our size generates a day.

The strict quarantine inspection done on goods entering Australia in
general, and South Australia in particular (can't trust those evil East
Coasters!) has worked quite well to date, keeping phyloxera away from
our precious old vines and rabies from our dogs. Equine flu has got
into East Coast race horses recently, so they can't run properly; the
jockeys have to keep stopping to wipe their noses. Our camels remain
quite healthy, though, and are becoming more popular for racing.

Other countries are less fussy about quarantine requirements, and allow
more kinds of food to be brought in. I had intended to bring some
kangaroo jerky with me on my last trip to USA, but was advised by a
lady at Continental Airlines that it was not allowed; I don't know why.

On two occasions when I have been travelling by bus in Mexico towards
USA, the bus has been stopped at a military check point well south of
the border, and all passengers' luggage opened and checked. I got the
impression that they were looking for weapons, perhaps on the basis
that Mexico hasn't got enough of them and USA has too many, so they
didn't want anyone taking them away. :)

GJ>What is it about some people which attracts this kind of attention?
GJ>MLoo seems to also get the treatment more frequently than the average
GJ>traveller. Perhaps having frequent and diverse visa stamps in the
GJ>passport might be considered evidence of being a possible
 GJ>drug smuggler.

CS> Lord knows what I'd look like if my passport actually reflected all
CS> the places I've been. But no, when you travel by ship, your passport
 CS> isnt stamped.

Perhaps not when travelling on Naval vessels, but when I sailed from
Darwin to East Timor many years ago the Portuguese immigration officer
gave me a pretty stamp in my passport on which the name of the yacht
was written.

These days travel around Europe, by train or plane, is fairly
effortless, with no inspection of checked luggage, and just a simple
stamp in the passport. Visitors are welcomed.

CS> Meantime, dinner is cooking. With limited gear, I can't do my usual
CS> sort of thing and I havent got the sort of 'side things' one builds up
CS> over time as of yet.
CS> Charlotte is tending it while I BBS in the back room.

Good for her! It is getting towards the time where she will be able to
cook the complete family meal one or more days a week.

CS> It's about time to start a pot of rice. I'd forgtten how much harder
CS> that is on the gas range in a stove pot. Cant just turn the heat off
CS> after boiling for example yet the lowest setting is a little 'high'.
CS> I end up having the tend the darn thing every 10 mins and getting
 CS> separatist rice to boot!

Sorry for you! Once you are used to using an automatic rice cooker it
is a pain having to return to the saucepan method. Perhaps you can get
a metal mat to put under the pot until your rice cooker comes.
