Ärende: Commisary trip
======================
Figured you might like to hear of our first decent sized trip.

While still awaiting the HHG's from Sasebo, it was time to do a reasonable
stock up operation here. The fellow as we checked out was worried we couldnt
write a check as we'd be over limit but I assured him, it was under 200$ as it
was almost all fresh produce and food. I was right. 180$ and mostly what we
need for 3 weeks though some things will run low sooner. I scampered out
happy while the clerk's jaw hung down.

I went as wild as my limited regular freezer allows for in the beef section. As
you can guess, I'm really hapy with beef prices here. So much of it is under
2$
a lb that I am amazed! Not just ground beef either! RIBS! And those 23$ a lb
steaks are a mere 7.99lb! Whoo boy!

I smiled sadly and passed up the .89lb pork shoulder as it was more meat than
we can eat fast and no way to freeze that much leftover. Bone in stuff.

Got more than I will list, but here's the general run. Items with * were
cheaper in Japan. Items with ! were seasonally cheaper. Items with - were
just
not sold there:

Beef ribs, big meaty ones, 2-2.5 lbs
pork ribs, country, bone in 2-2.5 lbs
ground beef, 1.5 lbs
catfish, 1.5 lbs -
chicken thighs, 6lbs (.69lb)
Beef round steak, 2 lbs

bok choy (they only had large but thats ok, can work with it) *
head cabbage *
idaho potatos, 5 lb bag -
calrose rice, 5 lbs
2 lbs turnips *
1 green pepper *
1 anaheim 'bannana' pepper -
6 ears corn (.23 each)
1 head lettuce !
1 large red onion *
3 lbs white onion
1 vidalia onion
1 butternut squash
1 acorn squash
1 large halloween pumpkin

4 lucious looking green eating apples
4 bosk pears -
1 avocado (hard to tell, may have been cheaper in Sasebo but smaller) !
5 bannanas !

2 lbs raw peanuts - (had only pre-roasted)
2 lbs pistacios

sundry cans: green beans, corn, tomato types (sauce, smished, and pastes),
mushrooms, black olives, spagetti and meatball (just 2, Charlotte likes them
and I need stocks for fast fixes now and again), oyster soup, clam chowder,
shrimp bisque, kippers, tuna, aparagus. More i am sure but that's what I
recall
and several of most of those cans. We already had cream of mushroom and
chicken
noodle in abundance from BJ's.

Pancit noodles (cantonese) *
dried lentils -
dried yelow split peas -
(I'll wait for the crockpot to do other bean types).
5lbs calrose medium grain rice *
3 various boxes of pastas

Datu Puti brand 'brown vinigar' *
Kikkoman brand mirin (works well enough) *

1 lb turkey pastrami- deli -
1 lb sliced havarti - deli -
1 lb chedder
8 oz pepperjack
16 oz reduced fat sour cream
1/2 g 2% milk
1dz large eggs

1g 'sunny delight'
1 small 'jar' tang (strawberry-zing)
2 boxes (10ea) Caprisun fruit juices
24pack pepsi
12pack 'Cherry coke zero' -

1 4pack box saltines *
1 lb bag potato chips (reduced salt)
20 little boxes in a bag of raisins
1 4 pack pudding
1 6 pack applesauce
(last 3 are for school lunches)

2 jugs draino
1 handwash dishwashing liquid (also used for refilling hand wash in bathroom)
2 sponges *
laundry sorter with 3 'bins' (hard to define, perhaps not sold)

Smile. Needless to say the fellow is used to seeing carts of that size add up
more due to 'other stuff'. Prepared packaged stuff.

I'll run low on bread (I get it at a bakery outlet for 1/2 the cost of the
commisary and it's on the way home), fruit (had oranges here), rice, seafood,
cabbage, carrots (had some which is why I didnt get more but found Charlotte
ate'em all up when I got home), eggs, milk, samwich meats; within 2 weeks
or at 2 weeks and need more 'lunch box' stuff for Charlotte then too.

In a newsgroup I joined recently, there are some yahoos ragging that you cant
feed a family (they were talking one of 5 with one still at the breast I think)
for less than 200$ a week unless they ate unhealthy and didnt get proper
nutrition. Well, I'll grant ya that load would have been closer to 350$ in
Sasebo. Charlotte eats more than I do now <g>. I see a growth spurt in the
works...

I still havent gone to the asia grocery yet. I will though. Spices on order
arrive Thursday or Friday.

               xxcarol
