Possibly a form of lightweight chain-mail armouring over the flexible
skirts would suffice to protect them against sharp ice shards.  From
what I saw on the TV cover of the ice roads, the surface is graded
smooth, so roughness is not a problem.  When transferring between the
land road and that over the ice, some fairly steep grades were shown,
which sometimes cause difficulty.

      Title: Mango Lassi [Pakistan]
 Categories: Beverage, Fruits
      Yield: 3 Servings
 
    1/4 ts Ground cardamom
           -green, shelled seeds
           -or cardamom powder
  1 1/4 c  Plain yogurt
      1 c  Chopped ripe mango*
      3 tb Granulated sugar OR
           -to taste
      8 ea Ice cubes
 
  * Or use canned mangoes, drained. Or canned mango pulp.
  
  Soothing and satisfying, this sweet, pale orange drink, which is
  served all over Pakistan and India, can be made with ripe mangoes or
  with good canned ones. You may add Pakistani flavorings such as rose
  water or kewra essence (available in Indian stores) to taste, if
  you'd like.
  
  DIRECTIONS: Crush shelled cardamom seeds and measure one fourth
  teaspoon (or used cardamom powder).
  
  Combine with yogurt, mango, sugar and ice cubes in a blender and
  blend. Some ice pieces may remain.
  
  Serve in individual glasses, sprinkled with nutmeg, if desired. Makes
  three servings.
