You never know until you try.  I always sort of half jokingly said that
I'd like to get on "Jeopardy", mostly because I knew getting to a place
where local try outs were conducted was not local to me.  I was never in
LA either, to take the test there.  The one time I had an outside chance
(in Germany, 1988), my name was not selected in the random drawing for
the Frankfurt (where we were located) testing.

As you know, the test crew came to Honolulu in February.  I'd signed up
on the web site a couple of months before and got word about 3 weeks
before the test that I'd been selected to take the test.  Altogether,
there were about half a dozen groups of test takers; I know they got a
total of 8 future contestants from the first day, I was in the first
group on day 2 and they gave the test once on day 3.  Of our group of
roughly 60, 4 of us made the cut..................I was the last name
announced when they informed us who had made it.  I've seen 3 people on
the show this spring & know of one more who has been taped; I think they
were in the first day's testing pools.  Now I'd like to go on & beat Ken
Jennings' record.

What it all comes down to, is make that DVD & submit it.  You never
know; you might have just what they are looking for as a food show host.
Then we can all say "I know that guy!".


Wednesday afternoon there was a steering committee meeting for the
battalion family readiness groups.  I went to it (sort of had to);
afterward, some of the young company commanders (male, all in their mid
20s or so) were talking about weird foods they had eaten, mostly dog and
things like that.  Then balut was brought up (and explained); some of
them had tried it. I just commented, "oh, the treat with feet"--which
surprised them that 1) I knew what it was and 2) they had never heard
that nickname for it & 3) wondered how I knew about it.  I mentioned
corresponding with Australians with Philipino relatives; I think I made
some points with the guys tho. (G)
