Ärende: WINNING WINE 71117
==========================
Hi there Glen!
->
-> Dooday Hap,
->

Hmmm, "Dooday?" That's a new one for me!

-> -> -> I drink all of those, although South Australia is mainly known
for
-> -> -> robust Shiraz, which wins lots of awards.
->  ->
-> -> HN> I usually go for the few wines I am fairly familiar with, but
I'll
-> -> HN> start looking for some shiraz and give it a try!
->  ->
-> -> Look out for those from South Australia, particularly Barossa
Valley,
-> -> in the mid-price range. I don't think Anne would like it, but I
hope
->  -> that you would.
->  ->
->
-> HN> Duly noted, Barossa valley...what the heck is a "mid" price though?
->  HN> (grin)
->
-> I suggest between $10 and $20 a bottle.  Anything above $20 would be
-> for special guests. And below $10, for less welcome guests. :)
->

That gives me plenty of working room...although
I tend to see more lower priced wines in the
grocery stores and more $15 and up wines in
wine stores. I like pinot noir, and it's
hard to find a good one for less than $20
although I do look! I think most of the
wines I have at home run somewhere between
$15 and $35 so I think that would work for
my "midprice".

  HN> At that level of consumption I would think there would be little
  HN> doubt -> HN> that he has reached that goal already!
->
-> I very much suspect he might be on the way if he starts to drink more
-> heavily.
->
-> -> He occasionally has an AFD (alcohol free day), just to convince
himself
-> -> that he is not. I think the last AFD was in 2005...
->
-> HN> Either he's sozzled to incomprehension daily or he's very tolerant
of
-> HN> large quantities! One AFD in the last 700+ is not a good indicator!
->
-> He can still operate at a blood alcohol level which would leave me in a
-> horizontal state. I occasionally have an AFD or longer if I happen to
-> be in circumstances where alcoholic drinks are not appropriate.
->

It would certainly have me almost comatose!(grin)
I don't think I've had a sip of wine in
the last 2 or 3 weeks...but I'm planning
on having wine on Thanksgiving!
BTW, saw on TV this morning a segment
on wine...screw cap -vs- cork, 50% of
New Zealand wines are screw cap, 15% of
Australian wines are, and less than 5% of
American wine is. very interesting!

->  ->  HN> I probably drink less than 6 bottles of wine a year, but I am
->  HN> trying
-> -> HN> to drink a bit more pinot noir which is supposed to be good for
my
->  ->  HN> heart!
->
-> HN> I'm working in that direction! I'm sure that we'll open a bottle of
-> HN> red for me on Thanksgiving and it may take me a couple of days to
-> HN> finish it but I'll enjoy it I'm sure!
->
-> When I travelled around in Austria, Italy and France with my niece from
-> Houston, she was surprised to see that virtually everyone there always
-> drank wine or beer with lunch and dinner as a matter of course. She
-> soon got into that habit, and appreciated the natural association
-> between food and wine, and general convivial good living.
->

I'd probably be fine with a bit more...but I
 don't enjoy being drunk, and it takes me
several days to finish a bottle of wine,
and often it manages to go bad before I
manage to finish it...and I hate wasting things.

-> I normally drink wine with dinner, at least, whether I am dining alone
-> or with friends. When working on the plantation and dining in the
-> canteen in Sumatra, Indonesia, alcohol was not served, but the highly
-> spiced and flavoursome food didn't really suit wines; iced tea was
-> better. A beer back at my hostel room was welcome, later.
->

I enjoy a good beer about as often as I
do a good glass of wine.

-> Visiting Brunei for a week, where no alcohol is sold or available,
-> caused me no distress, although the first glass of red wine once I got
-> back to Darwin was very welcome.
->

Doing without doesn't bother me much.
Having it available is good too.(grin)

-> -> -> HN> (grin). I was actually planning a trip north of the border
to
-> -> -> HN> Vancouver, Calgary, and Edmonton to see photographer
-> -> -> HN> declining us Dollare has encouraged me to stay home!
->  ->
-> -> Perhaps you could persuade them to visit you instead.
->
-> HN> I try, but they are awfully provincial (grin)!
->
-> Tell them it is now time for them to play the part of rich tourists, so
-> they should take advantage of the present exchange rate while it lasts.
->
Most of them are as frugal as they are
provincial (grin). Like me when they
have discretionary dollars they tend
to spend them on photo gear!

-> -> With the cost of getting oil out of the ground less than $10 a
barrel,
-> -> but the sale price now over $100, it is obvious that some people are
-> -> doing very well indeed!
->
-> HN> May they all be infested with wombats in their woolies!
->
-> At the very least!
->

AMEN!

-> HN> I have a ready supplier of bison meat whenever I wish it, and the
-> HN> price is not too bad either!
->
-> Lucky you. That should go well with the Australian shiraz.
->
Or Cabernet, or pinot noir!
I think I'll have a glass today!
chat with you soon
