Ärende: NORFOLK SAILORS 71120
=============================
-=> Quoting Dave Drum to Glen Jamieson <=-

GJ> DD> You would think a town like Norfolk that is so dependent on the
GJ> DD> Navy for such a major part of its dough-re-mi would be more
GJ> DD> kind to its members. It would only be in their enlightened
 GJ> DD> self-interest.

GJ>That is truly amazing! Living in that atmosphere would drive you
GJ>round the bend! How does a situation like that develop? Did
GJ>something terrible happen, and it was allowed to escalate? And as
GJ>Norfolk is now apparently a friendly place, how was that situation
 GJ>resolved?

DD> Apparently fright over losing their ca$h cow and major source of
DD> income had a lot to do with it. IOW - the base closure committee
DD> pulled an economic gun on them. Bv)=

That is understandable, but I wondered how the conflict all began.

GJ>When I last passed through Piraeus, the port of Athens, it seemed a
GJ>reasonable enough place, having been a major port for over 2500

DD> In the late 1950s and early 60s it was a political thing. The gummint
DD> of Greece was pretty left wing and Murricans were, by definition
DD> "Imperialist War Mongers" (even though there were no wars going on).
DD> Sort of the complaint British silly villains had against US servicemen
DD> in WWII - "They are over-fed, over-paid, and over here!"

During WW2 there were complaints by Australian soldiers about the
Americans doing R&R in Brisbane and elsewhere, but the complaint was
that, "They are over-paid, over-sexed and over here!"

DD> Lots of political agitation against US policies aiding (or not) the
DD> Greek gummint - depending on the agitator's political leanings. And
DD> the poor swabbie, being required to wear his uniform whilst on
DD> liberty, was the highly visible, easily identifiable symbol of the
DD> "Imperialists". Especially when we stayed neutral in the Cyprus
 DD> dispute.

The Greeks I spoke to when there still are not very pro-USAn, but their
main criticism was directed towards the policies of the USAn and
British leaders (the latter being Blair at that time). My 4 travelling
companions all held USAn passports, but none had been born there, so it
was easy for them and me to reply to queries about what countries they
came from with "Philippines, Mexico, Taiwan and Australia", all places
which had no conflict with Greek politics. Interestingly, Blair was
the most hated politician, because he had not yet agreed to the return
of the Marbles, cut off the Parthenon and stolen long ago by Lord
Elgin. There is a large, airconditioned museum ready and waiting for
them, but at present only has exact, plaster copies on display. The
originals remain in the British Museum.

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

      Title: Htipiti
 Categories: Greek, Appetizers
      Yield: 6 Servings

           Karen Mintzias
    1/2 lb Feta
      3 tb Oilve oil
      1 md Italian pepper
           -- seeded & finely chopped
      1 Pickled green pepper
           -- seeded and chopped
      2 ts Oregano
           Pepper to taste
    1/2 Lemon; strained juice only
           Black olive; for garnish

Htipiti (pronounced h-tee-pee-TEE and translated as "that which is
beaten") is the name Macedonians gave to this tart feta spread. The
longer it is beaten, the more tart it will be.

In medium-size bowl, mash feta with fork or potato masher and slowly
add olive oil, chopped peppers, oregano, and black pepper. Pulverize
mixture for about 10 minutes (less if using a food processor),
pouring in lemon juice a little at a time, until feta is creamy.
Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Yields about 1
  cup.
