That reminds me of something similar that happened to me, but in
semi-rural Indiana (LaPorte - in the nortwestern corner of the state).
I was new in high school, my freshman year (this is before my mom taught
me at home), and I was getting to know kids there.  I was introducing
myself and had mentioned I'd lived all over the US, lived in Germany,
been to Belgium and Austria...and to my suprise, one kid asked, "Have
you been to South Bend?" (South Bend is a large city about 40 miles
east of LaPorte.)  I shook my head and he said, "Then you've never been
anywhere special!"

I was shocked and rather irritated.  Upon going home and discussing this
with my dad, who is from LaPorte, I found out that their reaction was
normal.  He mentioned something about he knew several people as he was
growing up who had /never left LaPorte/.  Not even to go to the next
town.

I've been blessed to do some serious traveling, especially here in the
States.  It still amazes me to this day to see how...redneck people are
about going somewhere new.  I'm wanting to take my wife on a road trip
to visit a good friend who lives out in Quartzsite, Arizona (a two hour
drive west of Phoenix-waaay out in the desert).  She's never been that
far west yet and she's never been on a road trip of that length.

Since we have that nice new Saturn VUE, I was talking to her that we
could do it after she got her license (although I'd still do most of the
driving).  I'm wanting to take Interstate 40 which follows most of the
original path of Route 66 - in fact, along some parts of I-40 going
through Oklahoma and the Texas panhandle, if you look to the right, you
can see the original Route 66 roadbed and in some places some of the
pavement still there.

At least Raine has been blessed with being able to visit different
places and countries.  I admit-I've never been to Canada yet, but I'd
like to go someday...if I can get across the border. :)

Was the community insular or simply inbred?

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.06

      Title: Morning Rice
 Categories: Low-fat, Breakfast, Rice
      Yield: 1 Servings

      2 c  Cooked brown rice
    1/2 c  Soy milk
      2 ts Honey
      1    Apple, chopped
      1 ts Cinnamon
      2 tb Raisins

  Mix all ingredients together in a medium bowl.  Jam could be used in
  place of honey, and any fruit you like.

  I also added 1/4 cup crushed pineapple with some of it's natural
  juice. I microwaved it for approx. 30 seconds, just to take the chill
  off.
