Kommentar till en text av DAVE SACERDOTE
Ärende: Weird Food: 846
=======================
-=> Dave Sacerdote said to Jim Weller <=-
DS> I have several friends who are vegetarians, others who eat
DS> poultry and fish but won't eat "red meat", and still others
DS> who are vegan. Only one of them (not the vegan) has ever given
DS> me a hard time about eating meat, but shut the hell up when
DS> I mocked her for her hypocrisy in favoring leather clothing.

But she shut up. Points for that.

DS> My own personal philosophy is not, of course, anything like
DS> vegetarianism. However, I try to keep in mind that living
DS> things were sacrificed to provide me with my food, and that has
DS> led me over the years to be less wasteful (I try to utilize
DS> every bit of a cut of meat, for example, for one thing or
DS> another) and more demanding of humane treatment for food
 DS> animals.

I think that the mental gulf between farm and table, enforced
by boneless cuts in shrinkwrap and pretty colored advertising,
yields a number of unanticipated effects - the tendency to take
very cavalierly the fact that our life depends on other life,
with the corresponding tendency to wastage (perhaps not too
upsetting to the advertisers), as well as the extreme reverse
that occurs when people of greater sensitivity suffer the shock
from tumbling to the fact, leading to veganism and other kinds
of insanity.

JW> In some stores, they experimented with
JW> "lobster condos," filling tanks with stacks of large pipes the
JW> critters can crawl inside. And they moved the tanks behind
JW> seafood counters and away from children's tapping fingers.

Just crazy. These guys are empathic enough with the bugs to not
want to disturb their delicate nervous systems but not enough to
want to kill and eat them (or sell them for this purpose). Reminds
me of Roger Rosenblatt, who, when asked what he would have done if
Hitler had given a speech in his neighborhood, said, I'd let him
give his speech. Then I would have killed him.

DS> Large pipes. If their lobsters are taking up residence in the
DS> tanks so long that they need condos, they need to hire buyers
DS> who can better judge the turnover so they're not buying so many.

Indeed.

DS> And the really humane thing to do would be FEED the lobsters
DS> in the holding tanks. Strange that no one ever thinks of that,
 DS> huh?

Back in the olden days, when crustaceans lived for a while in
these tanks, occasionally they would be treated to a nice piece
of herring now and then.

JW> Animal rights activities were thrilled with the decision,
JW> not just because of the way lobsters are harvested, shipped
JW> and stored but because of the fate that awaits many of them
JW> - being dropped alive into a pot of boiling water. "The ways

This means that they are looking forward to the day when
killing bugs becomes illegal. They'll end up living on
weeviled biscuits if their logic ends up persuasive.

JW> that lobsters are treated would warrant felony cruelty to
JW> animals charges if they were dogs or cats," said Bruce
JW> Friedrich, a spokesman for People for the Ethical
 JW> Treatment of Animals.
DS> Except they're not dogs or cats, with well-developed central
DS> nervous systems, they're big bugs with tiny little sandbags

Except that would it make a difference if they had a better
developed central nervous system? I say it shouldn't.

-=> Dave Sacerdote said to Jim Weller <=-

JW> Nope. They don't exploit animals in any way or starve cute
JW> little calves by stealing their food. They don't even eat honey.
 DS> Yes. How sad.

Veganism is a sad philosophy in itself.

JW> Feel free to substitute nutritional yeast fillets if you're
 JW> feeling guilty....
DS> I can't bring myself to butcher the innocent single-celled critters.
DS> I'm afraid I'll just have to live on pure, clean air.

Breatharianism is the logical conclusion. And then only if
you wear a micropore mask to prevent as many little critters
as possible from being sucked in by our great vacuum cleaner
lungs. One of those Indian sects actually advocates this.
