True!  Oh, still learning the quoting here so please bear with longish quotes
if i cant trim down well yet.

I have a desire to play with the spider pots but havent really any great skill
with them as of yet.  Just a neat toy.  I figure if the renters left me with
10,000$ worth of repair bills, the least i can do is enjoy the few nice things
they left us <g>.

Stretching out on the floor before the fireplace appeals to me!  Yes, such
cooking does take a while and most of my recipes for it are very old time and
things I garnered from folks in their 70's when I was a teen.  Things that
could safely cool down or have water added to endlessly as they cooked down
(often both).

My first encounter with salt boiled peanuts was out of a spider pot by a
fireplace and as you can tell, I loved them right away and have adapted that to
a crockpot.

I was taught that this is just a simple way to reuse heat and keep the
electrical bill down while also providing a surface that will re-radiate some
of the heat back into the house (most fireplace heat goes up the chimney unless
trapped somehow).

One of the simplest uses for such a pot, is to add aromatic plant bits
(popouries sp?) and water and just add more water as needed.  This can add
moisture to dry winter air as well as a nice scent.  You add a little oil to
the pot (such as olive) to keep it lubricated but not too much.  Just a swipe
with a paper towel is enough I think.

The pots are also used when I was a kid, on a hot summer day, to just keep food
warm by setting them in direct sunlight to heat naturally, then filled with
foods as they came off the grill.  Old style chaffing dish for outside use <g>.
