=================
Hello, MICHAEL.

20 Jul 06 08:06, you wrote to me:

ML> I've never found a citation for this - can you help me out?

Unfortunately, it's something I saw on a newsmagazine years ago. I'll look to
see if I can "back it up", but to me, it only makes sense! :)

ML> I've had to chalk it up to "urban legend," but if you can steer
ML> me in the right direction, I'd be much grateful.

I will try to find something. And well, wouldn't you know...

http://www.sciencenews.org/articles/20040619/fob6.asp

(June 2004)

"Six-year-olds who took weekly piano or singing lessons throughout the school
year exhibited an average IQ increase of 7.0 points, says psychologist E. Glenn
Schellenberg of the University of Toronto at Mississauga. Other 6-year-olds who
either took weekly drama lessons or received no extracurricular lessons
displayed an average IQ rise of 4.3 points, Schellenberg reports in the August
Psychological Science."

(Article is much longer in length)

...

http://www.apa.org/monitor/jun06/iq.html

(This is from June 2006)

"Organized music lessons appear to benefit childrens IQ and academic
performanceand the longer the instruction continues, the larger the effect,
according to a study published in the May issue of the Journal of Educational
Psychology (Vol. 98, No. 2)."

(Article is more complete)

...

I gained these results by typing "music students iq increase" into Google.
There's about 717,000 hits for it. However, look carefully - there's also
articles about boosting your IQ by /listening/ to Mozart (and that's not what I
was looking for).

It only makes sense that doing something that is both creative, detailed and
demands exacting attention that would cause the brain to exercise and get
smarter. I have always found that because I taught myself a few computer
languages (such as Pascal), I've found it easier to be able to understand
complicated things, break them down easier and "follow" them through to
completion (such as using a flowchart, et al.).

ML> That's the prime purpose of the stuff, after all. If everyone who
ML> were a musician, then nothing would get done. Of course, there
ML> would maybe not be so much turmoil in the world, either.

We'd have composing wars or something. :>
