I actually noticed that furtive transaction but forgot it.

Burt calls her (and she would no doubt be exercised if she
found out) "Little Dave" - their tastes and attitudes are
remarkably congruent, and I don't think it's from coercion
or mind control!

I had plenty of food, as you saw - didn't make much of
a dent in the lo mein, which went for Lynnie's lunches
for the week, and had some difficulty finishing the
large serving of calamari, even with substantial aid.
When people offered me lobster bodies, I accepted
happily (I love tomalley and enjoy the challenge of
getting the tablespoon or two of meat out of the body
chambers); when, defeated by the tripleness of the
lobsters, they started discarding claws my way, I
figured I could either eat them uncomprehending, being
full to bursting, or give them away to you. As you were
a little lobster deprived, I thought it a good thing.

It's clear they make their money on bevvos. 25c worth
of juice, a glass and a cubey thing worth maybe that
each, and many dollars charged. With booze, okay, a
buck of booze, two or three bucks of price. Makes one
wonder how restaurants and bars ever fail.

Ah. I didn't see that far. I knew that they had dietary
things going but didn't notice what they had.

Sopa de Mariscos - Fish Soup
cat: Philippine, fish, soup
Serves: 6 to 8

2 lb fillets of any fish with white meat
3 c water
1 onion, quartered
1 c chopped leeks
30 clams
1/2 c minced onion
1/4 c olive oil
salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 ts sugar
2 Tb minced garlic
1/4 c croutons
2 Tb raw rice
2 tomatoes; diced [not in original ingredient list]
1/2 lb squid, sliced into 1/2" rings
1/2 lb medium-size shrimps, shelled and deveined
2 c fresh or frozen crabmeat, cooked
1 c tomato sauce
2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced
2 Tb minced parsley

Simmer fish fillets in water with the quartered onion and leeks.
Strain and set aside the stock. Cut fish into chunks. Set aside.

Boil clams in enough water to cover until they open.
Strain and set aside clam stock. Remove clams from their shells.

Saute onion and tomatoes in 1 Tb of olive oil.
Season with salt, pepper and sugar. Set aside.

In a large saucepan, heat the rest of the olive oil and brown
the garlic. Remove garlic and set aside. Fry the croutons in
the same oil. Remove and set aside. Add the rice, squid, and
shrimp. Pour in all of the fish stock and simmer for 20 min.
Add clam broth if more liquid is desired. Add the fish, clams,
crabmeat, and tomato sauce and garlic bits. Mix everything
well, adding more clam broth as needed. Season with salt and
pepper. Add croutons. Transfer to a serving dish. Serve hot,
garnished with egg slices and parsley.
