GJ> With everything stowed in the lower cargo holds, and the overhead

ML> They now have started allowing carryon but are scrutinizing it
ML> more carefully. Result: plenty of space in the overhead bins.

That would be a nice change for the peasant class!

GJ> lockers empty, I wonder if the balance of the aircraft has changed.
ML> Yes, but for the better: one wants an aircraft to be
ML> balanced low unless it is used for aerobatic purposes.

Logical.

GJ> Providing they were all on the same wavelength (thinking of the lack
GJ> of communication resulting in that commercial airliner being shot down
GJ> by the US Navy over Iraq) a few years ago.
ML> The Iranian airliner was not broadcasting on a band
ML> recognized by the Navy and probably not on any of the
 ML> internationally agreed-upon frequencies.

He should have realised it was US territory, and used US Navy
frequency. Pilot error. Could happen to anyone.

GJ> I had wondered if any incipient terrorists would find it useful to
GJ> monitor radio activities by listening on Channel 9.

ML> Doubt it would make any difference. If they wanted to do their
ML> thing at a particular location, looking out the window could be
ML> all they needed; if not, GPS equipment could easily be taken

In any case, most airlines these days that I have been on have a
constant display of the plane's location on a map. I was thinking
more of other Channel 9 info, like, "Tower to pilot; beware of
sinister looking Asian carrying a viola case. If he attempts to leave
his seat or use a computer, get your air marshal in 1A to shoot him."

ML> aboard. Shortly after 9-11, some discussion was entertained on
ML> the subject, and the consensus both among the frequent flyers
ML> and the company pinheads was that there is no information on
ML> ATC that bad guys could easily leverage to their benefit.
ML> Anyhow, it wouldn't be difficult to smuggle aboard a receiver
ML> that picked up the frequencies in use (they're a matter of
 ML> public record).

I heard that now airlines are seriously considering banning computers
altogether, following reports of another manufacturer (Apple) doing a
recall following occasions of batteries spontaneous exploding into
flame. That would cause considerable ructions.

GJ> Hopefully the wine will be good, even if the food is inferior.
ML> Your best hope is that the wine is plentiful.

It should be, on Qantas, but that is only the first leg, of 7 hours or
so. The next leg, from Singapore to Amsterdam is much longer - 13
hours - and I will be flying clog class on KLM; dunno what their
catering is like. Have you had any experience with them?
Maybe something like:

MMMMM----- Recipe via Meal-Master (tm) v8.05

Title: Kraut Chops, Christopher Dock with Dutch Stewed Potatoes
 Categories: German, Pork, Dutch
      Yield: 4 Servings

      6 Or 8 pork chops
      1 qt Sauerkraut
      2 tb Butter
      4 Or 5 potatoes
      1 ts Minced parsley
      1 Onion
      1 tb Flour

Cover the sauerkraut with water in stew pan and let simmer until
tender. Keep warm while frying the pork chops. Then empty the
drippings from the chops upon the kraut and let simmer for 3 or 4
minutes longer. serve with the chops laid on top of the kraut.

Make the Dutch Stewed Potatoes thusly: Brown the butter, and mince the
onion and brown it in the butter. Dice the potatoes (which have been
peeled and soaked in cold water overnight) and put into the pan
together with the parsley, also 1 tsp salt, 1/2 tsp. pepper. Put in
pan just enough water to cover and cook until tender; then thicken
  with flour.
