No, he was the regular catcher before Carter. And he was the
regular Expo catcher after Carter. I don't know why or how,
but it looked like an even switch. And in fact, Montreal got
more use out of Fitzgerald than the Mutts got from Carter;
except for a slight homer differential maybe.

By the way, I looked it up. It was the day after Dr. K set
the record for most strikeouts by a rookie in one game and
in one season and was in the midst of setting a record for
most strikeouts in 3 consecutive starts. I think he also
tied for what was at the time the most strikeouts in a
9-inning game (Nolan Ryan had more in an extra-inning game).
It appears from a quick glance at mlb.com (I have no more
time than for a quick glance, because the site is so bloated
and takes several minutes to load on a dialup connection, and
even the quick glance isn't so quick) that Gooden had only
one no-hitter, and that was with the hated Yankees late in
his career.

There are some interesting sites out there. With only a

3670 was the game I went to. Can you imagine how fanatical
the webmasters must be to give precis of every game?

Depth is so important. The Red Sox have often scraped their
way into the playoffs with not so much, but when stuff happens,
they just fold up. This year, they were getting consistently
beaten badly on when the big guns were absent. Now, with the
heroes back, they're just losing 10 to 9 ... TO THE ROYALS???

Chilled golden pear nectar
cat: soup, cruise
servings: 100

12 kg canned pears, including juice
200 g lemon juice
4 L pear juice
4 L fruit syrup
300 g Pear Williams schnapps
2 L Champagne
300 dried cranberries

Combine first 5 ingredients and blend until smooth.
Refrigerate.

Before serving add the Champagne and divide among
100 soup cups. Garnish with cranberries.
