-> MR> I went to the Hometown in Enfield and the people were pleasant,

-> ML> Perhaps the food is in general better in California. How does
-> your Hometown compare with that place you took me, the
-> Continental or Colonial or something?
->

Colonial Willamsburg, I am surprised that you remembered the
name. It had a slightly better selection of dishes then, but
declined over the years. I was in the neighborhood a few
months ago and decided to pop in for lunch. But it was
out of business and the space was being rebuilt for something
else. I tracked down the Long Beach Hometown and had lunch
there instead. Now that I think about it, it was worse than
the one in Enfield. The food at the Hometowns seems to vary
not only from place to place, but from day to day. The
fried chicken is good unless it is over-cooked and dry. The
roast beef and steaks are low grade beef, but can be
ok or not depending on if it is rare and juicy, or dry and
over-cooked. But for a guy who eats out 95% of the time,
a place where you can get soup, salad, side dishes, cold
beverage and coffee, dessert and get to play entree roulette,
all for about $10, it aint a bad deal. I go about 2 or 3
times a month. At its worse, which is not that often,
there is usually something that you can make a meal out
of and sometimes you hit the jackpot.

As for the food being better in California, it's like any
American big city. Compition tends to improve everybodies
game. Though I will say the ethnic diversity pays off in
a wide choice of cusines. Last month I ate at an Ethiopian
restaurant. I may be the first Rothstein in the history of
my family to have done so.

-> (And something that bothers me no end - once we went to a
-> sort of pan-Asian buffet - large rectangular room, many
-> windows on 2 or 3 sides (which distinguishes it from most
-> places of this sort), lots of sushi, some of it fairly good;
-> also lots of sort of Chinese comfort food ... I don't
-> remember what it was called. Can you recall such a place?)

That was Sumo. Haven't been there for over a year, something
annoyed me the last time I was there, can't remember what it
was. Maybe its time to check them out again.

->
-> MR> I ate at a Hometown in Yuma, Az. that had a pot roast loaf
-> MR> (?) I've never seen before. And it wasn't bad. So much for
->  MR> uniformity.
->
-> ML> What was that like? Beef froid a la mode, or was it warm?
->

It was an oval loaf made up of bite sized chunks of meat. Very
regular in shape, so it might have been factory made. The meat
chunks were fully cooked but tender and moist. Reminded me of a
cross between beef and breast of veal. They had a slightly
synthetic pot roasty flavor. Think dusting the chunks with
a blend of garlic, onion, and celery powders before forming
the loaf. You served yourself by gauging out a serving with
a big spoon (giggle). The adhesion between the chunks was about
the same as a meatloaf. At the bottom of the pan was a
generouse layer of gravy and root vegetables. My impression was
that they were introduced to each other just before the pan
was brought out of the kitchen. And yes, it was warm, shmarty
pants.
