ML> It's the story no one would tell.
DS> Did you have a session open in another window that might have
 DS> crosspollinated your clipboard?

Sometimes I add a header to remind people what the
previous conversation was about - neglected,
unfortunately, to do so in that post. In this case, it
was the speculation that Natural Selection's president
should be named Gene Pool. The co-author of the book
described on the Powell's website is Eugene Pool.

DS> BTW - Remember what I've told you about my high school years, and
DS> you will not be too surprised that my history class covered this
DS> incident during my senior year.

I found about it in my reading - never heard a peep in
history class anywhere anyhow (of course, at university
I took only useless old history). I think the mainstream
view is in fact that no such thing happened, and if it
did, it was an accident.

-=> Dave Sacerdote said to Jim Weller <=-

DS> But, do they do things differently in California than they do
 DS> here?
JW> Sadly, they do. The working conditions for seasonal, migrant farm
 JW> workers suck.
DS> I suppose that the reasons conditions are bad is because no one wants
DS> to pay another dime a pound for their lettuce and grapes.

Mostly. Since Cesar Chavez, there hasn't been an effective
advocate for the thousands of illegals and other migrants who
do keep those prices down. I think that one reason why the
government is pushing the fencing solution for the southern
border is that it looks good without being good. We need a
lot of labor in the agricultural centers.

DS> blocked access to the grape vines we used to harvest, and the bastards
DS> at another local business sprayed herbicide on their blackberry canes
DS> because I had an argument with them last year. (The business is
DS> leasing unposted land on which I have gathered blackberries for nearly
DS> 20 years. According to common law here, because the land wasn't
DS> posted and because I've always enjoyed access, the lessor has no
DS> legal right or ability to keep me off the land. So the sons of
 DS> bitches sprayed the canes.)

Wouldn't it have been cheaper to post a few signs?

JW> The migrants I worked beside all said they liked working in
JW> Canada better than the American South including California.
DS> I'm not at all surprised.

There's the point people bring up that "if it's so bad,
why do they persist in working here?" which ignores the
powerful influence of desperation.

 JW> Have some endive instead....
DS> Eww. You know what belongs in a salad? Cool, wet, crisp iceberg
DS> lettuce (the yellowy hearts, if you please.) Native summer tomato
DS> or none at all. Olives, black preferred but any as you like.
DS> Paperthin curls of carrot. Tender, sweet, roll-cut celery. Salt,
DS> freshly coarse-ground pepper, the best olive oil one can afford,
DS> and some flavorful vinegar: good cider vinegar, perhaps, or some
DS> lovely Italian wine vinegar, white or red. Some crumbled bacon,
DS> and lovely toasted buttery croutons. And rub the bowl with a clove
DS> of crushed garlic first. Now THAT is a salad, m'lad. None of that

Iceberg is okay in its place, but in a sandwich it generally
makes me want to retch.

DS> fongoolia or arroogola or whatever the hell it is, no weeds out of

I like fongoolia and arroogola and stuff. Or I would if I knew
what they are. Hey, what's to prevent this same contamination
from happening in the iceberg lettuce fields, or, for that matter,
the edible flower and fongoolia ones?

DS> the back yard, no "edible" flowers. I'm not livestock. And no
DS> spinach. Cook the spinach with a knob of butter and add some cream
DS> sauce if you will, but cook the stuff. [g]

I love cooked spinach, but I also love spinach salad, with
the greens just wilted by a hot bacon fat and sweet-sour
dressing. Thus wilted is also the best way to eat raw
mushrooms, which not coincidentally are an ingredient in
the classic spinach-bacon-mushroom salad.
