Ärende: airline woes 428
========================
ML> on a nonstop flight that was broken up without our knowing to
ML> two separate flights, with separate numbers. Our didgeridoos

I'd misremembered. What happened was our flight was changed
from a nonstop to a "direct," with a bonus landing in
Chicago, and its number was different from our original
number, which was confusing. We didn't realize - the
boarding passes didn't say - that there was to be the
extra stop until we arrived in LAX.

GJ> Were you surprised to be landing at an unexpected airport? Was the
 GJ> pilot surprised also?

No, but the flight attendants were not fully aware: when
we got to the gate for Flight 106 (which was what the
boarding passes said), the board said Chicago, but we
figured, whatever, United would take care of us. On
boarding, we heard "Welcome to United Airlines Flight 106,
bound for Chicago, and, uh, we think continuing on to
Boston." Very comfort-making, that.

GJ> That sounds like the fault of UA check-in desk in Sinny. A facility I
GJ> preferred to avoid. After I had finally learnt to find my way around
GJ> the old airport, they built a new one, supposedly better.

We checked in with the NZ counter because our transpac was with
them, and the NZ computer was unaware of the changes, just
chugged out its documents without notifying us of anything.
The agent did have some difficulty printing out the passes
but pushed some kind of override button to get them to us.

ML> My point was actually that they would probably be reasonable
ML> enough at this point to plot out attacks that would maximize
ML> damage, though not substantially more reasonable than that.
GJ> There is a difference between ability to reason, and being reasonable
GJ> in attitude towards humanity in general.

They're reasonable to THEM.

GJ> "In the event of the aeroplane disintegrating in flight, fasten your
GJ> parachute by placing your arms and legs through the straps provided,
GJ> wait until well clear of the bits and pieces of the plane, and pull
GJ> firmly on the D-shaped handle to deploy the parachute.

I think not. The effort and intelligence required to use a
parachute are not negligible.

GJ> A sudden 30% decrease of lift on one wing would be enough to result in
GJ> irrecoverable loss of control. (Check with your fly-boy friends.)

So a light aircraft could do this, but it's doubtful that your
RPGs would be able to.

ML> Most takeoffs veer pretty immediately away from your populous
 ML> areas - this is a long-standing policy and derives, I believe,
ML> as much from noise abatement procedures as security issues.
GJ> Oh, of course, human comfort takes precedence! Fortuitously, in this
GJ> case it coincides with human safety requirements.

Exactly what I was saying.

   This does not apply
GJ> in some places like Manila, where failing planes occasionally fall
GJ> onto some of the poorer suburbs.

Another reason not to fly PAL or to live in Manila!

GJ> I was told that that restaurant no longer provided house wine in
GJ> carafes, so I had to order it in a bottle. The $20 wine listed had
GJ> disappeared, but the waitress asked if I would accept another bottle
GJ> at the same price. It was something I had never heard of, a Cab Sav
GJ> Shiraz blend from the Barossa. Two Hands Winery. and "Imported by
GJ> .... of Pittsburgh, PA". Obviously another bottle labelled for
GJ> export, but deviated into the local market. It was reasonable.

Perhaps it had fallen off the back of a lorry?

GJ> fine bouquet, but quite a lot softer flavour than I expected - more
 GJ> like a merlot.

American sissy palates: you don't have to do the insulting,
I'll do it.

Acceptable at the price, particularly as I wasn't
GJ> paying. I checked that winery in the phone directory, and it
GJ> appeared to exist as an office in North Adelaide.

Aussie business practices: you don't have to do the insulting,
I'll do it.

Bibingkang Malakit
cat: dessert, Filipino
servings: 6 to 10

2 c glutinous rice
4 c coconut milk
1 1/2 c brown sugar
1/2 ts salt
3/4 c thick coconut milk

Bring coconut milk to a boil in a big skillet. Add rice and salt.
Cook on medium heat, stir until rice is tender and almost dry.

Stir in 3/4 c of the brown sugar, lower heat and cook covered
for 5 min.

Spread cooked rice mixture in a greased foil - lined pan. Combine
the rest of the sugar and thick coconut milk. Pour on rice in
pan, spreading to cover top evenly.

Broil in the oven at 350F for 4-5 min or until top is brown.

This is a Filipino dessert. It is made on special occasions. It
is very good and sticky. And it looks like a regular cake.
