Hi Hap,

-> Thanks; it's good to be back. We are going to be in base housing; it's
-> a roughly 2000 square foot place (half of a duplex)--2 story, 3 good

hn> Whoa big place....get lots of practice vacuuming that place! (grin)
hn> how will your leg/foot do with stairs?

We'll see; the cast came off today but need to schedule a CT scan. As
usual, the x-ray showed all was healed but when the doctor poked and
prodded it, the foot still hurt. He told me to keep using the cane but
I'm wearing a regular shoe on my left foot for the first time since
sometime this spring.

-> It's a nice area, a lot more urban than any place we've been assigned to
-> since Germany but we're getting to know our way around a limited area.
-> We've found a natural foods store, a hybrid natural and gourmet foods
-> place, a quilting shop, a Hancock fabrics, a bunch of restaurants and,
-> yesterday, found our church home (3rd church we visited since arriving).
-> There's lots of good eats, a number of places that are good for
-> inexpensive eating and of course, all the chain places we're used to.
-> My favorite of those is Chik-Fil-A. (G) We tried a Zaxby's chicken
-> place once so far; it seems to be a newish chain in the south. I wasn't

hn> Two years ago after I retired I took a month and visited family in
hn> Tenn, VA, NC, SC, and Florida...I LOVED the Chik FIL A billboards!
hn> Stopped in at one and the food was good enough for fast food, but the
 hn> advdrtising is super!

Their advertising is cute and the basic sandwich tastes better than a
hamburger IMO. I had it a few times before Steve went into the Army
when we lived in NC--didn't know I'd be missing it until we started our
travels with the military. I've pretty much stopped eatig fries,
including their waffle fries, but do get their carrot-raisin salad. It
seemed a bit on the bitter side this time, as if they'd used older,
tougher carrots and not enough pineapple.

-> It's good to be off the road, tho we did enjoy visiting our girls and a
-> number of friends while en route. Had a couple of good meals around
-> Mobile and another meal that wasn't as good but the setting was
-> impressive in North Carolina (at the High Hampton Inn near Conyers). Our
-> new car had about 3800 miles put on in the drive cross country from Las

hn> How are the girls by the way, and the grandbabys? What kind of car did
hn> you get? How did your foot/leg do with all the travelling?

The girls are doing well; Rachel and family are settled in up in Las
Vegas. Robert goes to the preschool associated with the private school
where Rachel teaches 3rd grade. David works at that campus and the
other one in the northern part of the city--they live right near the
Henderson city line. For the most part, they ignore Vegas but have
visited a cafe in the Paris casino for crepes (more about that another
time). Robert will be three at the end of next month; hard to believe!
He's very mmuch into transportation so Rachel & David are taking him to
a Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends show for his birthday.

Deborah keeps quite busy with her job and keeping after her puppy in off
time. She's still with the AZ National Guard, over in the Mesa/Tempe
area but she is renting her sister's house in Surprise. The plan for
the school Rachel and David work for is for him to start a branch in the
Phoenix area in a couple of years or so, so they decided to keep their
house and rent a small place in Vegas. They did take both cats with
them. (G)

My foot did OK on the trip; it was a bother getting about with the cast
& cane but better than a non walking cast & crutches. We bought an 07
Ford Focus SES (wagon); it held all our stuff nicely. We picked up a
small cooler (plugs into the power outlet--formerly known as lighter--in
Vegas and kept it filled with water, some chocolate we picked up at
Trader Joe's and a bit of other stuff. We put the back seat down and had
plenty of room for 6 suitcases, the cooler and other things we picked up
along the way. Not the car we'd been thinking about getting but we are
very pleased with it over all. There are a couple of minor quirks but
nothing completly unreasonable. We can fill the gas tank a lot cheaper
than we did in HI. (G)

-> experience; Steve's sister and brother in law were on a cruise ship;
-> we've not heard from them yet. We experienced a quake when we were in
 hn> CA
-> in 1984; I'm just as hapy not to have gone thru this one. (G)
 hn> ->
hn> The first one is always the worst one...once you get used to em
 hn> they're kinda fun!

We've probably been thru more than we realise; I know there were quite
a few small ones in/arund the big island while we were in HI. I don't
mind the small ones but I don't want to be in a big one. The one we
went thru in 84 was a 5.3.

Catch you later,
