Last night I took Anne out to dinner at a new local restaurant
TWOKOI; a sushi "fusion" place. It's the grand opening and 50% of the 
proceeds go to the Cancer Society (since we have so much of it in my family 
it's like our "own" charity) so I took Annie for a surprise dinner. It's about
4 
blocks from Cutters Coffee shop, so it's in the "New Revitalized" downtown, 
next to the brand new Convention Center...and in an old renovated restored 
turn of the century building. I am guessing since half the proceeds are going 
to charity, this is the "feeling out" period for the new place. 40 kinds of
Sake 
are listed and the prices are a bit steep...Menu is intersting but not really
out 
of the ordinary. Anne ordered the Chicken yakisoba and got a huge portion 
that was interesting in that the seasoning wasn't quite what we are used 
to...and it had crispy fried (almost tempura) lotus root in it as well as the 
regular ingredients. I had "Surprise crunchy spicy tuna" which was spicy tuna 
(raw of course) Piled high in the center of the plate (maybe 6-8oz) with some 
sort of leaf that had been tempura fried layered in the stack...with ebi roe 
and sea urchin roe and sauces spritzed around the plate (as if it were 
chocolate, or aoli), with a pyramid of uncooked pasta "covering" the pile. It 
was good but hard to eat with chopsticks as you couldn't just dig in and take 
a bunch of tuna witout running into the leaves...and you couldn't break the 
leaves off to get at the tuna...a bit frustrating. We also had sake, momokowa 
pearl, a sweet sake with a HUGE banana flavor to it...not bad but 
surprising...I wonder if they added the banana flavor?  Timeing was way off 
as well...we ordered two starters edamame, and gyoza...both came with the 
sake and were good...then before we even got a couple of the gyoza 
down...the salads showed up (nice salads too with an asian ginger carrot 
dressing with sweet vinegar and cucumber and tomato and endive, a very big 
salad as well), and before we were half way through them (the appetisers 
were still there as well) the main courses showed up....which resulted in a 
table full of plates and us sort of hurrying along to keep up with the pace. 
The food was good and not too highly priced (didner came to $58 +tip) for 
both of us and the sake was $13 for a small bottle. I think we'll go back and 
give it another try but it wasn't siginficantly better than Tama Sushi which 
still remains our favorite place for this sort of dinner.
