Bonjour Ian!

world
-> >-> wide - as yet discovered - where it can grow and fruit successfully,
and even

-> >
-> >Thanks, that does explain a lot.
->
-> Good.
->
-> >I'm still learning a lot about wine and grape growing as well.
->
-> So am I. not only is there a humongous amount to learn and know, but
things
-> are changing faster than one can keep up with.
->
-> >Washington is expanding it's wine grape industry in the
-> >eastern part of the state and evidently there is an area there that is
ideal for
-> >pinot noir
->
-> Really? I know that the Walla-walla region, which is a small area in the
-> East of the State has relatively recently started up as a serious wine
-> growing area, but when we visited it, it was being used for quality Merlot
-> production, though "K" vintners were making some Syrah based wine that
-> Australian wine makers wouldn't be ashamed of.

Evidently according to the Washington association of wine grape growers,
Washington is second only to California in wine grape production!

-> >they are having much difficulty with the vines, which is what prompted
my query as it seems that the growers do
-> >everything possible to distress vines when they are growing them!
->
-> Well, two things. If you're sure it's the Pinot Noir, I'm curious to know
-> where. I didn't see any worth talking about on '03. As for distressing the
-> vines, it's certainly a truism that "il faut souffrir pour faire du bon vin"
-> "The vine must suffer to make good wine". This applies to Europe, at any
-> rate, where the best wines are made from vines grown on land that you'd
not
-> try to grow thistles on. The only stress that doesn't lead to good wine is
-> lack of adequate sunlight. The Pinot Noir grape has a better flavour profile
-> if there are relatively high day/night temperature variations, but when it's
-> not SO hot that the grapes ripen fully before the arrival of the longer
-> nights of Autumn ensure a long "hang time".
->
One of the links above refers to pinot grapes being grown in the Chelan area
which would be on the east slopes of the cascades but not way over in the
eastern corner of the state.

-> >I think Oregon is big in pinot production as well. More so than
Washington which is
-> >just beginning in the industry.
->
-> That's true. The Willamette valley is the place. It's just south of
-> Portland. And that makes me curious as to how Washington can grow PN
in it's
-> _eastern_ part. If you were to say that _Western_ Washington only about
50
-> or 100 miles north of Portland was starting up with PN, then I'd not be
-> astonished, as it would sort of share climatic condition, but the area EAST
-> of the Cascade mountains is very different.
->
-> >I hope you stay connected to the echo, we certainly did miss you!
->
-> Well this technology certainly suits me better than the rather roundabout
-> method I was using last time. The only question that remains is time. This
-> is the very first minute (7.04pm) that I've been able to come on today for
-> example. I'm going to try my best.
->
-> Bon appetit
-> Ian in Forges

We look forward to your conintued presence!
And give Jacquie a big hug from us!
chat with you soon
