=================
ML> No, it seems to have been a lack of support by the management
ML> more than the dignity of the designers or the incompetency of
 ML> the assemblers.
GJ> So what is your theory why "management" continued to make monsters?

No theory. Just reporting what happened. Smaller cars
were made as well as larger cars, but the smaller ones didn't
sell (the Japanese ones were, and are, better). I forget
what the advertising was like.

GJ> The Japanese also produce a few very large people, but Sumo wrestlers
GJ> can drive around in American cars.

Can they? Do they? I wouldn't think their trainers would
permit them to drive around in the first place.

 ML> I = subject
ML> feel = copulative verb (now called by the bluenoses and
 ML> political corrects "linking verb")
 ML> bad = adjective.
GJ> When I drink too much alcohol and try to read Braille my fingers feel
 GJ> badly... (?)

If, of course, you are sentient at all.

GJ> Wasn't a violin case the preferred concealment for Al Capone's
 GJ> tommy-gun?

That's what the common folklore says, but I don't think so,
as the Thompson shouldn't fit into an unmodified case. Maybe
a broken-down gun without magazine might, for smuggling
purposes, but that wouldn't be too helpful in combat. Now
a modified viola case, I could see maybe.

GJ> I had wondered how you managed on those occasions. I understood that
GJ> some musicians' insurances specify that their instruments have to be
 GJ> with them on aircraft.

What mine specifies is that mine be in my control whenever
I am in a conveyance.

GJ> "Australia has the highest per capita wine consumption of any
GJ> English-speaking country. Australians, in fact, consume about two and
GJ> a half times as much per capita as Americans do."

What are the beer statistics? I was really put out at
Kevin's bar when I asked for a beer and the barman
didn't draw a pint, but rather some fiddly little thing.

GJ> Of course we have Kevin to help us.

What I was thinking.

Blanc de poulet au muscat sur lit de poireaux
cat: main, poultry
serves: 4

6 fl white wine
6 fl Muscat
12 fl creme fleurette*
s&p
3 1/2 lb leeks
salt water
16 chicken cutlets [?1 oz each]
20 ts butter

*substitute light cream

Chicken breast with Muscat wine on a bed of leeks

Sauce:
Combine the wines in a saucepan and reduce to about
1 oz. Add the cream and reduce to about 6 oz total.
Season to taste and keep this sauce hot.

Leeks:
Clean the leeks thoroughly. Split them along their
length and cut into 1 1/4" pieces. Make SURE they
are clean. Parcook them in boiling salted water
making sure they stay slightly crisp. Drain them
thoroughly. I wish I could capture the flavor of the
original, which is very quaint. For example:
"cuire dans de l'eau salee en gardant legerement
croquant, les poireaux. Bien les egoutter."

Assembly:
Melt 4 Tb butter in a saucepan and let it brown
slightly. Then cook the cutlets rapidly. Remove the
cutlets immediately as they cook ("too much cooking
would make them dry and bad-tasting"). Drain them well.

Melt the remaining 8 ts butter and heat the leeks well.
Arrange the leeks on four hot plates, lay the cutlets
on top, and sauce them.

If you happen to have a truffle handy, cut it into
tiny matchsticks and strew them over ("Si vous disposer
d'une truffe, coupez-la en fine julienne (petits
batonnets) que vous parsemerez dessus").

Goes well with Beaujolais Villages - nothing fancy - served
cold ("Boire avec cela un petit beaujolais village frais").
