ML> If, of course, you are sentient at all.
GJ> Depending on whether or not I am blind drunk, a state which I have no
 GJ> wish to reach again.

Last night I went to a party in a very posh bar; the host ended up
blind stinking drunk, which is fine as he signed a ticket for $1000,
and when I offered to pony up my share ($60 at the inflated prices
he was charged) he told me not to worry about it. He was one of
the most dedicated alcoholics I'd ever met. I was rather concerned
for him and was a little anxious when he disappeared someplace (he
has a fat wallet with many credit cards and hundreds in cash), but
his friends (I was a FOAF) said he'd be fine. The fact that he truly
damaged himself when drinking distinguishes him from the likes of
young Kevin. Elsewhere at this bar there were fistfights, falling
overs, and an extraordinarily beautiful Arab woman screeching about
[having had intercourse with] some person named by name. I'd come
with five friends, and four of them left in a huff fairly early in
the proceedings. My friend Kathy and I watched, sort of stunned, at
the rest of it. This Sodom and Gomorrah was a Thursday night. Made
one see the reason behind the decision of people such as the Hafflys
not to partake. I must say that my particular friends and I maintained
our cool while drinking almost excessively.

GJ> Although I have not had that personal experience, I would expect that
GJ> it would be very quick and easy to click a fresh circular magazine
GJ> into a tommy gun and start spraying bullets around.

Those drum magazines showed a propensity of jamming unless
they were inserted carefully. It could be the source of some
embarrassment if one had a hundred rounds to fire and was
put out of commission after only ten or twenty.

ML> What are the beer statistics? I was really put out at
ML> Kevin's bar when I asked for a beer and the barman
ML> didn't draw a pint, but rather some fiddly little thing.
GJ> I've forgotten the statistics, but I know that Australia is not the
GJ> leader, although Darwin leads the rest of Australia.
GJ> That sort of behaviour is the main reason Kevin stopped patronising
GJ> that hotel, even though it is the closest to his house.

So it wasn't just discrimination against me. I thought perhaps
they'd taken a look at me and put me down as a half pinter.

GJ> I was looking through my recipes to see if I had a wine trifle, but
GJ> couldn't find one. Do you eat such a dessert in your country? In my
GJ> youth it was an Australian standard. The closest I could find was:

We have no such thing. At one point wine jelly was served (even
to children), and I suppose it could be layered with cake and
cream or cheese to make a trifle, but I haven't seen it on menus
for perhaps 30 years.

Mascarpone
cat: homemade, cheese
yield: 2 c

4 c heavy whipping cream
1/4 ts tartaric acid

Line a mesh strainer with a dish cloth folded over to make a double
thickness. Rest the strainer over a bowl, making sure the strainer
does not touch the bottom of the bowl. Set aside.

Heat the cream in a double boiler over medium high heat. When the
cream reaches 180 degrees F, add the tartaric acid and stir for 30
seconds. Remove the cream from the stove and continue to stir for
another 2 min.

Pour the cream into a lined strainer and refrigerate. When it is cold,
cover it with plastic wrap. Let the cream sit in the refrigerator for
12 to 18 hours. It will become very thick and firm. The mascarpone
will keep for a week in the refrigerator. Makes 2 cups.

Now you can make all the Tiramasu you want.
