True, in some ways we are a very backward country...this is one of them!

Anne has 4 degrees actually, her first bacheolors was in Animal Laboratory 
Sciences, her second was an associates (2yr) in early childhood education, 
her third was her bacheors in elementary Special Education and her Master's 
degree is in early childhood special education. She has a "fair" health plan 2 
personal days a year, not much of a retirement plan (so we do separate 
investing for that). Summers are "off" only in the sense that she's not 
teaching...but she takes classes during the summers (awfully hard to take 
them during the school year except on weekends {which she also does} or 
evenings), to continue her professional development (the costs of which are 
NOT tax deductable)...and so on and so on...She goes in on weekends and 
does work in her classroom to be ready for the next week's instruction...she 
brings home 2-4 hours of work each night, and spends several hours on the 
weekend planning for the next week as well.  But she loves what she does 
and even though she knows she's being taken advantage of she's still happy 
to go to work every day! I wanted her to get a degree in international 
finance....there's REAL money there! 
ah well.........

If Anne moved to another district she'd generally take about a 35% pay cut.
