Ärende: Behind! 537
===================
Nothing wrong with being behind, and you've made the right
call. It's just a hobby, and though we appreciate anything
you can do, you have a wife and career that come before the
echo. (And, he whispers, above hobby programming, even if
that hones skills that you may use profitably in the future.)

-=> Sean Dennis said to All <=-
SD> I am so far behind in reading COOKING it's not funny. I've been very
SD> busy with work, school and working on my two cars (I actually now own
SD> three, but the third one is in limbo due to a title problem).

In three weeks I'll be about ten or fifteen days behind. When I
get back to full speed, I'll skim the messagebase, quickly knocking
out the ones that really really don't pertain to me, then whittle
away at the others until I'm done. This works - just adjust the
granularity to suit your situation. I'm a member (no surprise) of
"the world's largest frequent flyer community," which has well over
100000 members (I'm in my second incarnation over there, having
lost my original when I went from DOS (LYNX!) to Windows XP and
afm.org to juno.com; my new membership number is 1889). When I
get back from Glen's, there will be over a thousand new TOPICS
that might have amused me if I had more time on my hands; I'll
read perhaps the most relevant 5 or 10 percent of these eventually.

SD> - The program will hold over 2.1 billion recipes (a LongInt if
 SD> anyone cares)

2.1 Gigarecipes, which if made would make a serving or three for
every human being who has ever set foot on the planet. Very cool.

SD> - It will be a basic text-mode app. However, I may make everything
SD> "single screen", meaning that you will be able to access everything
SD> from a single screen using keys (like F1 to add a recipe, F2 to search,
 SD> etc).

Good choice.

SD> - It will be free. However, when the program gets to a point to
SD> where you find it useful, a donation would be appreciated. I will put

When you've totted up the number of hours you spent on the project,
you might reconsider that.

SD> people who donate to me into a "credits" screen that will be built into
SD> the program, so you will be IMMORTAL! (or until I lose the source <G>).

I don't want to be immortal! Not in that way anyhow.

 SD> Now more questions:
 SD> - How many catagories is realistic? 255, 32767 or 2.1 billion? <G>

255.

SD> - "Single screen" or multiple menus? My thoughts: it would be a LOT
SD> easier for me to do a single screen w/multiple keys than menu after
 SD> menu.

I'm guessing single screen with function keys.

SD> - Configurable color schemes? I know that I have a few of you that
SD> come on my board that have problems with the colors I use at times, so
SD> I think that would be realistic.

Yay for black and white! (though I'm in a minority of one,
most likely, on that one).

 SD> - Text-based configuration or menu-driven? My thoughts: text-based
SD> would be a lot faster and easier for me to set up and use, but
SD> menu-driven would be easier for you. Text-based would let me do the
SD> config easier also, meaning that if I were to add more configurable
SD> features, I could do it a lot easier in a text file. (If any of you
SD> that have ever programmed notice, I'm trying to do more for speed than
 SD> size for this program.)

I'm a text-based person, but bear in mind that I'm not going
to be your typical user.

SD> - English and Metric systems support internally (meaning, hit a
SD> button, it converts the recipe over)? This will take a little time,
SD> but I would be willing to add it in at a later time.

Is this necessary? As you can guess from my message to Gerald,
I don't like programs that babysit you.

SD> - Online help? Or would just having a printed manual be easier?

No preference. Guess most people would like built-in help.

SD> - Printer support? Virtual Pascal has /VERY/ basic support for
SD> printers! I can write a simple printer unit (library of reusable code)
SD> that will do the job. In both Windows and OS/2, printing to a USB
SD> printer would be impossible since DOS/CMD.EXE (in both Win32 and OS/2)
SD> cannot see USB printers right. I could put in support for very basic
SD> printing which is what I would assume everyone wants.

Could you have a routine where cmd.exe or command.com calls an
external module to access the printer?

SD> - Multilingual support? I could do this by using a keyword in the
SD> config file and people could translate if need be...

Nyet, nein, non, bu yow.

SD> Last but not least, how about a name for the program? <G>

Cookbook 1.0

What about the treatment of internal subheads?

Dolce d'amarula cheesecake
cat: dessert
servings: 16

h - crust
1 c graham cracker crumbs
1/2 c melted butter
h - caramel swirl
1 c sugar
1/2 c water
3 oz butter
5 oz heavy cream
h - filling
2 lb cream cheese, softened
8 oz mascarpone
1 3/4 c sugar
4 lg eggs
3 ts vanilla
1/2 Amarula Cream liqueur

Crust: Oven at 350F. Spray a 10" springform pan with cooking
spray.

Combine melted butter and crumbs. Add enough of this mixture
to bottom of pan to cover it. Press down. Bake 10 min. Let cool.

Caramel swirl: Heat sugar and water on medium until sugar is
dissolved. Raise heat to medium-high until liquid boils; boil
until liquid becomes amber. Stir in butter and then cream,
slowly. Set aside.

Filling: Beat cream cheese with sugar using a mixer; add
mascarpone and continue beating until smooth. Beat in the
eggs, one by one, then the vanilla and liqueur. Pour mixture
into prepared pan, then using a knife or toothpick, swirl
caramel into batter. Wrap bottom and sides of pan in foil
and place in water bath. Bake 30 min or until middle is set.
Remove and let cool. Refrigerate at least 2 hr to set filling.
Serve with chocolate sauce, fresh berries, and/or whipped
cream, as desired.
