Ärende: Home againis the Sailor
===============================
Hi Carol,

RH> They're basically a snack type munchie for Steve. Something to occupy
RH> his fingers when the brain is zoned out on the tv, most likely. OTOH,
RH> the chocolate is medicne for me. (G)

CS> (Edame beans) I wonder if they are easy to find stateside?

I'll find out soon enough; I should think Georgia would be a good place
to do that research. (G)

CS> yet. What I sincerely hope is that others will just 'try something
CS> new' now and again as i do.

RH> I do now and then but not on every shopping trip. Looks like Steve wi

CS> I dont do it every shopping trip either now, but often enough
CS> something 'odd' strikes me and I get it. Since that can happen
CS> several times in one trip, I'd say I average still once per trip if
 CS> not actually.

Now I've got to start picking up the odds and ends of favorites we've
found over here that may be hard to get in Georgia. I don't think there
will be too much new stuff, but I could be surprised.

 CS> BTW, it's eel season <g>.

Enjoy them; I won't tell Steve( he'd think them rather disgusting
anyway).

RH> quick check this morning. Found out my PCM had been hanging on to my
RH> records since I saw him last week but they are now back at the records

CS> Sorry on the foot there! Least they found your records!

Better than when they were lost for almost a year shortly after arrival.
The foot is a pain, but better to deal with than a bad back. It's not
always easy to stay off it tho, especially with townhouse type quarters.
I've already been up/down the stairs at least half a dozen times today.
And, I've got a neat cane to use for help too. (G)

RH> So maybe panko is a generic name and you would have to specify what ki
RH> you want if you want to be picky.

CS> Thats what it turns out to be, based on translation help. It seems,
CS> the product is made from 'rice bread' from 'rice flour' hence locally
CS> called 'panko' when dealing with us folks who know that name. 'Pan
CS> gohan' may be the right name? I missed part of that as Don was trying
 CS> to translate.

Oh well, it's a learning experieince for all of us. (G)

CS> mentioned before that this can be a trial when I try to post a recipe.
CS> I didnt know there was a wheat based bread version until I checked
 CS> Google.

RH> The old "learn something new evry day" policy at work again.

CS> Yup! Anyways, for recipe purposes any 'panko' you find would work the
CS> same though I guess those other ones are wheat flour based (white
CS> wheat). For your use, see if 'rice flour' works? Since rice flour
CS> comes in plain and 'sweet' you will have to see which you can get. I
CS> would be using plain but sweet may be ok to make a tempura batter.

No, I don't want a mochi flavor when I'm making beef stew or something
like that. (G) I will miss the mochi but not the halpia.

CS> Check the label of those expensive tempura batter boxes and see if
CS> some dont use rice? I imagine they do. None in my MM reference that
CS> but some of the most 'authentic looking' ones just say 'flour' and not
CS> which type. Rice flour is much easier to find out here in town....

I suspect the same for us. (G)

RH> train to Misawa. She told me that their luggage had to go on a separa
RH> freight train & was hoping it wouldn't get lost; I assured her that it

CS> Tell us how it goes when the time comes!

RH> Will do; it's actually Wed.; I looked at the calendar wrong.

CS> Done that a few times myself!

Easy enough; they will arrive before they leave. (G)

RH> Better hurry up; time's getting short!

 CS> ;-) Definatley

RH> But you've got longer over there than we do here since you did a COT/P
RH> & we just did 2 FSTE's. Our time is up in August.

CS> Yes, I saw. Looking forward to the land of magnolias? Come around
CS> August 2007, we may be looking for a more southerly picnic site
 CS> perhaps!

I am looking forward to living in the south again. We've been to visit
NC & SC briefly since leaving in spring of 83 but at times, too brief,
especially since a good number of our friends from years ago are now in
various places so we don't see all at once. It'll also be more
convenient if anything happens to our parents--don't have to catch an
overnight flight just to get back to the west coast& who knows how many
more flights to get to where they are. The van is beginning to strongly
hint that it's replacement time so we're debating several options. With
one of them, Steve said that we would probably get the electronic anti
corrosion feature since it's highly unlikely we'll ever live in areas
where lots of salt is used on the roads in winter (northeast). So far,
repairs haven't come to a regular basis, costing more than a monthly
loan payment but it's a matter of time before they do.

Catch you later,
Ruth
