======================
Hi Carol,

RH> fair amount of things to find new homes for--some older Tupperware,
RH> various mugs, a good number (but not all) of my canning jars and freez
RH> boxes, etc, etc.

CS> I'll be able to go shopping in my own boxes when I get back stateside

Again, nothing is in storage here so we're finding things that we had
packed in HI--but the packer's rhyme or reason for packing some boxes
was illogical. Found out how much I miss the freezer tho; the one on
top of the fridge is crammed full to just about bursting.

RH> unfurnished apartment is exactly that--no light fixtures, appliances,
RH> etc. We kept a couple of small transformers but all of our non

CS> Kinda like that too here. Nothing means 'nothing' in Japan. No oven,
 CS> fridge etc.

Same thing in Germany--much to the surprise of Americans who want to
rent on the economy.

RH> It's a staple with us. BTW, the bread turned out dumpy (not hardly
RH> risen) as did the pizza dough I made last night. I'm going to get som
RH> more flour, not quite as coarsly ground, and mix it in with this stuff

CS> Test the yeast too if it's a jar type? Might not be any good?

Package yeast, supposedly good for whole wheat flour breads (put out by
Hodgeson Mills) with an expiration of January, 08. Today's loaf is a
mix of Hodgeson Mills (the old) flour and Gold Medal (bought at the
commissary on Saturday) whole wheat flour. I'm using Fleischmann's
Rapid Rise yeast in this attempt.

RH> Picked some up at the Hunter commissary but it was French's brand, not
RH> the Lea & Perrins we like (shelf label but no bottles for that one).

CS> The frenches stuff isnt nearly as good as the lea and perrins, agree.

RH> Yes, but if it's your only choice.......

CS> Me, I skip it now if there's no other choice. Or I mix up some other
CS> thing in it's place rather, such as oyster and mirin.

We'll use it but not buy it again. I don't have too many extra options
on the shelf right now.

CS> I'll have to try the pepper sauce idea!

RH> other parts of the south but I do like pepper vinegar for greens. Whe
RH> we moved out of the area, I had to buy the Trappy's (?) brand and keep
RH> adding vinegar (heated, not quite to a boil) as the bottle got use. I
RH> may see what peppers are available & if I have a jar with a shaker top
RH> to make my own if decent peppers can be found.

CS> Sounds a bit like my 'spiced vinigar' so I'll try that.

Sort of. Would you believe when we went to the commissary on Saturday
(at Hunter) they don't carry it? Looks like serrano or some other kind
of small, hot peppers in the bottle. When I replenished, I'd bring the
vinegar up to just under a full boil, then pour it into the bottle. The
peppers are hot enough they can take a fair amount of vinegar
replenishings before loosing much heat.

CS> Next week, when we go to Okinawa, we hit the big AF exchange and get
CS> her more pants. She's outgrowing them all again.

RH> Good thing you have it available. In Germany, especially Berlin, I'd
RH> hit up the local Woolworth's from time to time to round out our girls'
RH> wardrobes. That, the thrift shop and sewing kept them from not quite
RH> looking like every other kid in the school.

CS> That would be the idea here. All the kids have the same stuff but
CS> they like some variation. Those boots I got charlotte in Thailand?
CS> The ones that look like a patchwork quilt? Garnered comments from one
CS> of the other kids who said they were cool and asked me where I got'em.
CS> Told her 'Thailand' and she just grinned.

Nice that the kids notice and appreciate the fact the boots just were
not from the local exchange. I suspect that kid has or has had some
clothes from different parts of the world if a parent is active duty
Navy.
