Ärende: Re: HOW TO GET A FRIDGE6
================================
 -=> On 12-16-06  09:37,  Glen Jamieson <=-
 -=> spoke to Dave Sacerdote about HOW TO GET A FRIDGE61216 <=-

 GJ> Was there some reason you couldn't use a double or triple adaptor
 GJ> plugged into one outlet. I would have thought that a refrigerator
 GJ> plus bedroom lights would not overload one circuit.

   A frig does draw a moderate current load when it first fires up the
   compressor. From the way Dave described it, I thought he was running
   a new circuit, with its own circuit breaker.

 GJ> Here, such a fridge is known alternatively as the "Beer Fridge", or
 GJ> "Shed Fridge", and it lives in the shed where men go to use tools,
 GJ> talk cars and drink beer.

  We have one in the basement -- it stores beer which sits there aging
  until Michael drops by, overflow stock in cheese and meats, and right
  now a Christmas ham that we bought on sale ahead of time.

 GJ> Being somewhat curious as to the different US standards for electrical
 GJ> wiring, do you have an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker to protect
 GJ> against electrocution? Here they are compulsory in all new houses,
 GJ> and recommended for fitting to older houses.

   I have called them GFI (Ground fault interupter) -- but according to
   WIKI, the correct nomenclature here is GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit
   Interupter). US English talks about neutral as being ground,
   English (and apparently OZ) English uses the term Earth -- so I think
   we are talking the same thing. These did not used to be standard,
   but apartently it is now code that all new circuits must have a GFCI
   receptical at the end of the line. We have three or four in our new
   kitchen. For even longer, it has been code that circuits outdoors
   and in bathrooms had to have them. Supposedly, they should protect
   against hair dryer in the bath water.

   OTOH, since Dave is doing the work himself, indoors, he probably does
   not need to involve an inspector.

   When the electrical inspector came to our house, he tested each
   plug to make certain that the polarity was correct. It is not
   difficult to get white and black wires switched in a circuit --
   sometimes with bad results.
