The Dead Sox have been playing like a .500 team lately. I
admit they've done well off the wild card position in the
past, but this unimpressiveness is rather unimpressive.

And if that "convicted" one weren't the owner, I'd
not hate the Bombers quite as much. Of course, all the
owners are crooks, but some are worse than others.

If worse came to worst, that's all I'd need: not
even a bed! Which makes it less painful for me
to overnight in airports sometimes.

I paid $4.18 (filling someone else's tank, of course)
... someone at the picnic said ruefully that it's a
sad day when anything south of $4 looks good. There's
one place up here in Mass. that has it at $3.50; I
figure by election time it'll be $2.50 or so as
various parties try to curry favor with the electorate.

Beef Curry
cat: tomatoes, main
servings: 4

1 lb lean beef
1 lb tomatoes
1 Tb chopped fresh coriander leaves to garnish
h - For the masala
1 lb onions
1 Tb peeled chopped fresh root ginger
1 Tb chopped garlic
2 oz vegetable oil
1 Tb cumin seeds
2 cari poulet or bay leaves
1 Tb salt
1 Tb ground coriander seeds
2 ts garam masala
1 ts ground red chile
1/2 ts turmeric powder

Begin by making the masala. Roughly chop the onions. Process
onions, ginger, and garlic to a smooth paste.

Cut the beef into large cubes and finely chop the tomatoes.

Heat the oil for the masala in a heavy-based saucepan or
flameproof casserole over a high heat and add the cumin
seeds and cari poulet or bay leaves. When the seeds
splutter, stir in the onion paste and stir fry until
light brown. Add the salt, ground coriander seeds, garam
masala, chilli powder, and turmeric and mix well.

Add the beef cubes to the masala and stir fry until they
change color on all sides. Cover, lower the heat, and
simmer 30 min, stirring occasionally, until all the
liquid is absorbed and the mixture begins to stick to
the pan. Stir in the finely chopped tomatoes and continue
simmering, covered, for 30-35 min until the tomatoes are
cooked and the fat separates.

Stir in gradually enough water to make a sauce of the
desired consistency; return to the boil. Cover, lower
the heat again and simmer again 20 min (or longer) until
the meat is cooked through and tender and the sauce
thickens to form a rich gravy. Add water as necessary
to retain a rich simmering sauce and avoid the curry
drying up in the pan.

Transfer to a serving dish and garnish with chopped
coriander leaves. Serve immediately with rice.
