The Czechs have been brewing beer commercially since at least 1285
in the city of Budweis. They developed a distinctive style of beer
just like Pilsener of Pilsen.

Budweiser Bier Burgerbrau was founded in 1795 by German-speaking
Czech citizens in Budweis and has been exporting Budweiser Bier to
America since 1875.

American Anheuser-Busch was founded by German-Americans in 1852 and
incorporated in 1875. They have marketed the Budweiser bbrand in the
United States since the 1870s and claim first registration of
trademark in that country.

Then there's a third company called Budweiser Budvar founded in 1895
by Czech-speaking citizens of Budweis.
  
Anheuser-Busch cites prior registration of the trademark in the US
and has battled for the right to use it worldwide in many legal
disputes against the two Europe-based companies in several countries
off and on since 1907.

The Europeans want to maintain/regain their right to market their
beer under the trademark. Burgerbrau has marketed its beer as
Budweiser Bier since 1802, Budvar has marketed its product this way
since 1895. They both claim that Budweiser is not a generic name,
but connected to the original city, just as the Pilsener style comes
from the town of Pilsen.

The existence of several beers with similar names has caused
problems in some markets. A long-standing agreement between the
American and the two Czech breweries divided the rights to the name
"Budweiser", so that the Anheuser-Busch product is marketed as
Budweiser in the US and Canda and as "Bud" in several European
countries and as Anheuser-Busch in Germany where the beers brewed in
the original city retains the rights to the name. The United Kingdom
is one of the few places where both the American company and Budvar
sold under the name Budweiser.

In the 1990s the American company tried to force the Czech companies
to stop using the name Budweiser althogether. After tasting both
beers officially in court the judge dismissed the case saying that
the American company need not fear that anyone would confuse the
Czech product with theirs!
