A very interesting question it is too! 
My cooking skills began as a result
of the feminist movement of the 60's.
I was raised not knowing how to do much
in the kitchen...a few cookie recipes and 
that was about it. Sometimes I got to 
stir the oatmeal in the mornings, but 
not much beyond that. The Kitchen was
my mom's territory and other than
washing dishes or raiding the cookie
jar we never went in there! My mom
waited (and still does) on my dad 
hand and foot. So my view of 
gender roles was skewed to start with!
My first live in girlfriend gets a lot 
of credit for "educating" me otherwise!
She was as headstrong as she 
was beautiful...but she did 
not care to cook, and I could 
not afford to take her out
every night. When I told
her to make me some dinner, 
what she told me to do with
the pots and pans is not 
repeatable here in mixed company (grin).
So I learned to cook! My daughter Amanda
was raised helping in the kitchen and learning
the "process" of making meals. She wasn't 
very interested in it other than it was part
of her daily life...now she's starting to 
explore cooking on her own terms and finding 
that she really does enjoy the endeavor. 
That being said though I'd say the echo is 
a not so typical example...because of it's very
nature we are more interested in the "process" 
than most others!
