========================
Hiya Ruth!

->
-> -> hn> budget carefully to meet all the bills and come
-> -> hn> out on the plus side of the ledger. (grin)
->
-> -> That's the key to it--good budgeting.
->
-> hn> Which we're having to do quite a bit of
-> hn> right now as the school district paid Anne
-> hn> too much money in the summer and took
-> hn> it all back in the most current check (last
-> hn> day of August) (yipes!!). Their story is that
-> hn> contratct). We didn't have any objections
-> hn> to paying the money back, but sure would
-> hn> have preferred not to have it all come out
->  hn> of a single check!
->
->
-> Sounds like the military. Hope you like rice & beans. (g)
->
We'll get by, but it will mean not so
many "extras" for a couple of months.

-> -> ->  HN> There's also a neat train museum in Sacramento
-> -> -> HN> consider that as well for future travels.
->
-> -> Mostly steam oriented or don't you know?
->
-> hn> More than likely Steam, as it's
-> hn> supposed to be covering the early era
->  hn> of Califunny's history.
->
->
-> OK, wonder if it's one my dad has seen. Being in CA, I'm wondering if
-> his railroad friend Gerald Best had anyting to do in setting it up.
->
I'm interested in finding out more abouit it,
if only for the photographic possibilites.

-> -> hn> TA usually, not teach. Happily Amanda
-> ->  hn> has TA'd (Teaching Assistant) several
->
-> -> I understand that some universities use grad students as teachers for
-> -> the huge classes ofundergrads (usually freshmen) taking required
-> -> courses. Sounds like Amanda did well to avoid that.
->
-> hn> She'd be certain to avoid that as she's not at
-> hn> the main campus which is about 2 hours away.
->
-> It's too much to ask her to commute too.
->
That would be a heck of a commute!

->
-> hn> She's at the Marine labs and while it's top notch,
-> hn> it's fairly remote for any number of students. There
-> hn> are several summer sessions, and the labs are much
-> hn> busier during the summer months than the winter.
-> hn> At least as far as visiting students and researchers
->  hn> go.
->
->
-> More marine life caught in the summer too, most likely. Gotta get the
-> critters for research while you can.
->
Yep, plus a lot of the senior reseachers are visiting
prof's from other schools and they are "busy"
during the school year (grin). The place is
sure hopping during the summer though!

-> -> hn> free to spend all her time doing her research
-> -> hn> and working on papers for publication.
->  hn> ->
-> -> Does she take time to cook decent meals or wait until you come to
feast?
->  hn> ->
-> hn> She also has a job at the labs so she lives in the
-> hn> Grad student dorm (has her own room) which has a
-> hn> very nice, very large, well equipped kitchen. She's
-> hn> starting to take an interest in cooking and she's
-> hn> pretty good at making whole wheat bread by hand.
->
-> Decent! I used to do whole wheat bread by hand, 8 loaves at a time. I
-> suspect her output is a quarter of that, at best.
->
I think she makes two or three loaf batches, but I'm
not sure, she didn't make it while we were there.
->
->
-> -> -> breakfast on week ends. Part will be used for our own version
of "egg
-> -> -> muffins"--whole wheat English muffin, cheese (real stuff, not plastic)
->
-> -> hn> We make those on occasion. Or we
->
-> -> We did similar years ago with real bacon and home made English
muffings
-> -> back when the girls were small. Then life got busy, the girls grew up
-> -> and Steve went on his anti bacon kick. Now that the girls are gone,
-> -> Thomas's makes a 100% muffin, and there's turkey bacon, we're doing it
-> -> usually Sunday mornings.
->
-> hn> If we're going to make a "fancier" breakfast, we
-> hn> do it on Sunday Mornings too.
->
-> Saturday is our fancier breakfast; Sunday we go for aa quick but nicer
-> than cerealkind of one so we can get out the door for Sunday School &
-> church.
->
We'll often go to mass on Saturday
nights, and we enjoy having Sunday's be
quiet and relaxing.

-> -> hn> shrimp farm! His Phd will be in aquaculture
-> -> hn> and he's doing his doctoral research in
-> -> hn> hormonal triggers to breeding in certain
-> ->  hn> crabs (I think).
->
-> -> Sounds fishy. (G)
->
-> hn> Most things in a marine laboratory do ! (grin)
-> hn> Since Amanda's doing her research this season
-> hn> with critters from San Francisco Bay instead
-> hn> of the local ecosystem, she's been assigned
-> hn> space in a "Quarantined" segment of the labs.
-> hn> which is actually much nicer than her regular
-> hn> space (which she still has). On this trip we
->
-> Interesting; does she have to "decontaminate" before going into that
-> area?
->
Not before going in, but yes before leaving. It's
in a separate building and the water supplies
don't go back to the local waters. They don't
want any critters introduced into the local
ecosystem. Even though it's likely that the
critters Amanda is studying are the same ones
found locally (usually in greater numbers than
this year), they don't take any chances and
quarantine the systems anyway. Even though
the critters she's using only come from just a
bit south of where she is now.
->
-> hn> got to see that the lobster research is winding
-> hn> down and there were only about 1 or 2 dozen
-> hn> of the pretty blue lobbies there...they look up
-> hn> and beg for food when you go by their little
->  hn> cubes!
->
-> But you can't use them for food. (G)
->
Amanda reminds me of that each time
I go by there and look in on them! (grin)
chat with you soon!
